Cleaning the carpets in your home can be a simple task or a complex chore

. You may just need to spot treat a recent spill after a fun night entertaining friends, or you may be looking to give your carpets their yearly deep-cleaning treatment. Follow these tips the next time you are looking to give your carpets a good cleaning.

Routine Cleaning

Routine cleaning is important to keeping carpets from becoming dull and grimy. Vacuum your carpets once a week or more to prevent dirt and grime from becoming embedded into the carpet located in heavy traffic areas. Take your time when vacuuming to ensure you cover the entire floor space and remove all of the dirt. Be sure to pay special attention to areas where people stand or walk more often such as around seating areas and in hallways. Their shoes are likely to track in extra dirt that can become imbedded in your carpets. While carpet fresheners are wonderful for removing odors, select one that is granular and not powdered. Unfortunately powdery substances clog the filtration system on your vacuum. You can find better carpet fresheners in a vacuum store. Then proceed as usual by sprinkling it on, let it stand, then vacuum it up.

Spot Treatments

Spills happen to everyone; however, they can cause a party to come to an abrupt halt. The number one tip for cleaning spills is to take care of the accident immediately. Do not let it sit overnight as that will cause the spill to soak in the carpet making it harder to remove the stain. Blot the spill before applying stain treatment. Don't rub the spill as this could cause the stain to soak in deeper or spread. Keep blotting the spill once you apply the stain treatment and be sure to work from the outside of the stain towards the center in order to prevent the stain from spreading.

Deep Cleaning

Deep clean your carpets if one of these four indicators is present: the carpet is matted, the carpet has grimy circles around the chairs, the carpet releases dust when you walk across the room, or your carpet is no longer the same color as when you first purchased it. Deep clean your carpets at least once every few years to extend the life of your carpets. Some homeowners may choose to hire a professional to deep clean their carpets. You can also do-it-yourself using carpet cleaning solutions.
