Hard Work At The Freshman 15

That first semester of college was the first time I had really been on my own

. Being on my own was a liberating experience, but with that freedom comes the power of making your own choices. Pizza and wings at midnight with the guys? Sounds good to me! Fast food and snacking on the weekends while planted on the couch? It was fun, it was comfortable, but it was taking its toll on my body.

Sometimes we dont realize how the choices we make affect us. I didnt feel any different - until that day that I was at my friends house in New Hampshire. I was changing and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. It was a pretty shocking sight. I had put on at least 15-20 pounds that first year in college and it showed. I was used to being pretty thin, so seeing the spare tire around my belly made me do a double take.

As soon as I got back to school, I started to work out. Every day I was in the gym, lifting weights, doing cardio and playing basketball. I stopped eating calzones at two in the morning while watching re-runs of Seinfeld. I started eating healthier. Days went by and I started feeling better about myself, but I didnt look any better. Weeks went by, I had more energy, but didnt see any noticeable changes when I looked in the mirror. Isnt it funny how its tough to see little changes when you look at yourself? Friends of mine were starting to notice that I had begun to lose the spare tire, but it was hard for me to tell any difference. I wanted immediate results. I was putting the work in, and I deserved to see results right away!

I eventually shed the 15 pounds, got into much better shape and have continued on a healthy path ever since.

I only share this story with you because it is one of the most important keys to success in building a thriving network marketing business. We live in a society that wants results NOW. We expect instant gratification; it is tough to keep putting work into something and not seeing the fruit of your labor. The incremental progress I was making each day as I was eating better and working out was unnoticeable to me. Others saw small changes, but it was difficult for me to see.

That moment was a turning point in my life. I made the decision that I was not going to be out of shape. I was going to be healthy and fit.I didnt feel good about myself at that moment, but I knew I had two choices. I could continue in my downward spiral, or I could make some changes and get on the fast track towards being a healthy person.

A successful person gets results. This is what we are taught growing up. I wanted those immediate results when I got into network marketing back in 2005. I was putting in a lot of work. This business turned out to be almost identical to the challenges I was going through when I started getting back in shape. I put in a few hours of work in my business, and I wanted to see results so badly. I worked out for a few hours and ate right, yet the next day when I stepped on the scale I didnt see any improvement.

A lot of networkers fail here. They expect that instant gratification. They expect to get paid for the work they put in. In this business, you are drastically underpaid for the work you put in, in the beginning that is.

If I had known this going into my business, it would have made me feel so much better! I thought that I was doing something wrong because I wasnt getting paid based on the hours I was working. I was working my tail off but wanted that instant gratification. Dont expect immediate results. You see the results of your business days, weeks, or even months into the future. You have delayed gratification, and that is tough to handle if you are not ready for it. If you know this going in, you are going to save yourself a lot of heartache.
