When you need to buy new luggage, it's best to buy the best suitcase or set that you can afford. But because luggage is expensive, it's easy to be tempted by the price tag for a cheap set of bargain luggage. Some people have bought bargain luggage -- not to be confused with good luggage bought at a great price -- and experienced no problem since they're very infrequent travelers. However, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. This lower quality of luggage may save you some money when you purchase it, but it can be a disaster waiting to happen on your next trip.

If you do a lot of flying, you probably know a few stories of the unpleasant treatment your baggage goes through. You may even have one or two stories of your own about suitcases being returned with torn zippers or large holes. While any luggage is at the risk of damage at the airport, poor quality luggage is even more prone to showing signs of abuse.

Poor quality hardside luggage can arrive on the baggage carousel with a hole in it, or cracked open. Polyester cases, which are cheaper than the far more durable ballistic nylon ones, rip and fray easily. A broken zipper can end up with personal items falling out into the street or in the terminal. Broken straps and handles make your luggage more difficult to carry around. Sometimes you're better off spending a little more for something that won't be as much of a hassle during travel.

Watch out for designer luggage as well. While on the opposite end of pricing from the bargain luggage, designer luggage is often constructed similarly, with only a label or trademark pattern increasing the price. The best luggage is often sold at a mid-range price -- cheaper than designer luggage, more than bargain luggage.

So when going out to buy new luggage, don't be swayed by the low prices of poor quality luggage. Instead, invest in luggage that will hold together for not only this trip, but for many trips in the future. You'll save both time and money, since you won't need to replace your luggage every few trips.
