Have A Historic Holiday In Windsor Hotels In The U.k.
The ancient town of Royal Windsor, famous for its historical castle and set on the
majestic River Thames, is the ideal place to stay in the Windsor hotels for that essentially British holiday.
Windsor hotels are easy to get to as the town is close to all London's major airports; in fact Heathrow is only eight miles away, perfect for a weekend break. Alternatively you can reach Windsor by rail as it easily accessible to the two railway stations. By car, it is close to the M4, the best junction to use being junction 6.
Windsor Castle is a must see, as it is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, and so unique. Look for the flag flying, which shows that the Queen is in residence. The magnificent state apartments can be visited, and the castle is full of old masters which are priceless. The castle dominates the town and can be easily seen from many Windsor hotels. The outside of the castle and its grounds are immaculate, and this iconic image can be bought on souvenirs such as biscuit tins. You can also enjoy the view of Windsor Castle from Brocas Meadows, which has a fine view of the house and grounds. Or go on an open top bus tour around the town, which is a great way to see the sights in comfort.
A little further away from the main Windsor hotels is Windsor Great Park, but this is still easily accessible by car to the outer car parks. Once inside the park, there is the lovely Virginia Water which you can get to by the Long Walk, but note that this journey is about 5 miles long.
Easy to get to from all Windsor hotels is the equally famous site of Runnymede. About six miles distant, and near to a main road, this is a riverside woodland site, first made famous by King John when he signed the Magna Carta. It is rich in plants and animals, and in this quiet patch of English countryside is also the memorial to the men and women of the Allied Air Forces who died in the Second World War. All their names are inscribed here, and many visitors go as a pilgrimage to relatives who died. Another famous memorial is the John F. Kennedy Memorial, dedicated to the American President. This simple memorial is at the top of a steep path of irregular steps, to symbolise a journey. If you need a more fun outing, Windsor hotels will have details of Legoland, only two miles away, and one for the kids.
