As the seasons change throughout the year, so to should the way your house looks. During spring and summer you should aim to create a light and airy look to complement the warmer weather.

Whereas in autumn and winter a warmer looking environment can help to make a room feel more inviting on those frequent cold and dreary days. Obviously this isn't to say you should be redecorating twice a year but certainly switching about some soft furnishings can help to have this effect. Having a couple of different rugs that you can use for different times of year can be an effective way of helping to change the perception within a room.

Clearly you don't need to have alternating rugs for all rooms within your home but getting them for the main two rooms that you want to feel comfortable in, the living room and bedroom, can be a good idea. For the warmer periods of the year you should go for something that is light in terms of both colour and texture. Choosing something that has got a bright colour can help to create a much more summery ambience in the room. On the other hand, during winter and autumn, you should try and purchase something with a darker and warmer colour to help create a more homely atmosphere and surroundings when you can need it most. Having a rug with a deeper and softer pile can also be of benefit during the colder months as they will give more comfort underfoot and can help to relax when you get in from the biting cold after a hard day at work.

Having a different rug depending on the season isn't going to do the job on its own so you should combine them with other seasonal furnishings for the best effect. In both the living room and bedroom you can change a number of things to help with the seasonal look but it is obviously important that whatever you buy fits in with the more permanent decor. You can have different curtains, cushions and throws in both rooms that combine and match up with the rugs that you have to create a completely different look. In the bedroom you should get yourself a couple of different bed sheet sets, again making sure that they fit in with the rest of your bedroom furnishings and decor.

Switching around the simple things in your home can have a big effect on making it have a completely different feel depending on the season. Doing this can help your home feel warmer in the winter and cooler during the summer months.
