There is however another method, and this method is based on the mixing of the primary colours which are blue, green, and red. The only problem with this method of creating white light is that it is not particularly even within the spectrum.
The other thing that LEDs are useful for is displays, because by their very nature, displays utilise different colours. But whether we're talking displays or lighting, LEDs are playing a very significant new role because they are so cost effective in terms of the amount of electricity they use, and also because of their longevity.
In terms of life, LED light bulbs can be expected to remain effectively operational for up to a staggering 100,000 hours. It is actually the phosphor coating that breaks down rather than the LED itself. Also, because they contain no mercury (like compact fluorescent lamps do), they are more ecologically friendly. Furthermore they do not create ultraviolet light. Last but not least, they did not generate any heat, which means they can be used in confined spaces where more conventional incandescent or even CFL's would run into trouble.
As technology continues to expand, we can expect to see LED light bulbs coming more and more into everyday use. They are already creating an exciting new demand.
