Siwa is a historical city in Egypt that has a rich heritage

. There are many special sites in and around the city that will give you the opportunity to enjoy modern amenities while you take a great step back in time. The following are among the sites that you can explore.

Ruins of Shali

It is interesting to note the period that Shali has lasted when you consider the material used in constructing the buildings. The 13th century ruins were made of kershelf, which is a mixture of clay and salt. Yet the place functioned until 1926 when heavy rains that lasted for three days destroyed the buildings. Some of the buildings were five-storey houses. A few of these old houses are still occupied!

Mountain of the Dead

Do not expect to find corpses or at least skeletons at the Mountain of the Dead, which is locally known as 'Gebel al-Mawta'. What you will see are tombs that were cut out of rocks from as far back as 6000 BC. Some of the tombs that are still preserved quite well, including their paintings, are Tomb of Si-Amun, Tomb of the Crocodile, Tomb of Niperpathot and the Unfinished Tomb of Mesu-Isis. Although the locals sought refuge in the tombs at times in the past, they avoid the site as much as they can during the night for they believe that it is haunted.

Gebel Dakrur

This site is about 4 kilometers towards the east of Siwa. It is a popular place for Siwan residents in general and rheumatic sufferers in particular. Those suffering from the condition come here to take curative sand baths. During the summer season, the locals gather here for one week eating garlic. The surrounding area is relatively dry because the water table is low. There is a bottling factory at Dakrur, thanks to the Siwa water. Other special features at the site are two tombs that date to the Ptolemaic era. There are Greek writings on one of the tombs.

Temple of Amon

Alexander the Great visited the Oracle of Amon in 331 BCE to look for confirmation that he descended from Zeus. The Greeks associated Zeus with the Egyptian Amon.

Apparently, the Oracle whispered the reply into the ears of Alexander the Great; hence no one really knows what it was. However, it is believed that it was in the affirmative because the powerful king expressed his desire to be buried at the Town. The kind of conquests he embarked on also give the impression that he believed he had the backing of the gods.

Although the temple of Siwa is relatively small, the site was of great importance in ancient times, as the Oracle of Siwa was among the most influential powers of the time.

Bir Wahed

This is a secluded location that affords great tranquility, something that will help you to relax. It is the site of a well located about 12 kilometers to the southwest of the town. Two popular springs are found here; Cold Spring and Ain Sukhna, which is a natural hot bath.
