Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a tooth to restore the shape, size and appearance of the tooth. When the crown is attached, it will fully cover the visible portion or your tooth and protect it. Crowns are generally used to restore a broken tooth, protect a weak tooth, hold a dental bridge in place or to cover discolored teeth. Usually front teeth that are restored with a crown are made from ceramic or porcelain so they resemble normal teeth as much as possible. Usually receiving a crown consists of two appointments. At the first appointment, your dentist will usually take an X ray of your tooth to make sure you do not need to have a root canal procedure performed prior to the crown being put in. Next he or she will anesthetize your tooth and file it down to make room for the crown to be put in. After this, your dentist will take an impression of your tooth to be able to create the new crown so that it fits perfectly. While the crown is being created at a dental lab, your dentist will provide you with a temporary crown that you will wear for approximately 2 to 3 weeks. When you come back in for the second appointment, your dentist will permanently cement your crown to your tooth. After the appointment, your new crown will become part of your smile and you will not be able to even notice it is there.

Dental Bridges

Unlike dental crowns, dental bridges are used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Anchored by two crowns, a bridge is made up of artificial teeth that close a gap in your teeth. Like getting a crown, this generally will take two appointments to complete. During the first visit, the two crowns (abutment teeth) will be prepared. This includes filing the teeth down followed by impressions being taken of the area. Again, you will be given a temporary bridge to wear for about two to three weeks. During the second appointment your permanent bridge will be installed in your mouth. Like dental crowns, you will not be able to notice the difference in your new teeth.
