British were one of the major colonial powers who were Kerala and Fort Cochin was the major harbor port and the major center of trade and other major activities of the colonial power in Cochin. When so much of British officers were in Cochin, there was a club for the British in Cochin. This was known as theCochin Club. The club still exists. The club exists in Fort Cochin with the same charm and heritage. Nothing is been changed and a bit of renovation is the only thing that is changed. The way waiters are dressed and the snooker table, lounge, everything still exist today, unchanged.

From a tourist point of view, a person who is interested in heritage buildings and to stay in heritage style, then this club would be the most appropriate suggestion. There are exactly 5 rooms which were built in the colonial period, which were guest houses for the British personnel and officers. These rooms are now given on rent, just like a hotel room.

Surrounded by rain forest trees, the rooms have one of the most spectacular viewpoints of Fort Cochin. The club is located strategically, right opposite to St. Francis church, in the heart ofFort Cochin. The club is in the banks of the backwaters of Cochin and there is lot of Chinese fishing nets near to it. There is a pathway adjacent to the backyard of the club, along the banks of the backwaters. These fishing nets and the backwaters could be seen from the rooms of the club. During morning one could join the fishermen in handling the Chinese fishing net ropes, which would be a very interesting activity.

There are exactly four rooms and a suite in the club which is given on rent for tourists. The rooms are neat, clean, and elegant. Their rent ranges from Rupees 2000 to 4000 rupees depending upon the tourist season in Kerala. The room rent is on continental plan where you get English breakfast every morning. Alcohol is not served in the club; you will have to buy it on your own. All these rooms face the backwaters and the estuary where the backwaters connect the sea. All the ships, trawlers and boats move to the sea from the harbor or port through the said backwater channels. The rooms are high roofed and are spacious. The windows are arch shaped and the doors are of wood. There is a separate area for dining and there is a marble topped dining table and 4 chairs. There are comfy beds and an attached bathroom, which is also spacious. The room is air conditioned and has a carpet. There is a television in the room, electric plug point and all are 230 volts electricity that comes in, which is common in India.

This half timbered mansion has facilities to play Billiards, Badminton, Tennis and Squash. There is a library where there is a collection of books and there is lot of sporting trophies placed. Catering services are provided at the club. The club still retains the old English ambience and style. The place is a bit lonely as it has just has 5 rooms and you cannot see many people around. But still this is in the heart of Fort Cochin. That is the interesting part, anybody would feel that they are far away, but still it's just a 100 Meters from The St. Francis Church. You could use the facilities of the club if you are staying in the club and as a outsider you would need to hold a membership.

There are no big name board in front of the Club. On the gate you would see "Cochin Club", but if the gates are open, there are chances that you would not notice it. The best way to find it is to, look right opposite to St. Francis Church, you will definitely find it out.
