Have your Christmas Workplace Cake and Eat it too

As the season to be jolly quickly approaches, whisperings about the office Christmas

party are upon us as the plans of where to go, what to do and how to go about it are all being discussed.

The Christmas do' conjures up images of drunken colleagues, uncomfortable Secret Santa' or dad dancing' moments and of course the business-banter across the dinner table. The hangovers are as painful as the walk of shame intowork and that can surely be avoided, we can have our Workplace Christmas cake and eat it too with a little bit of Office party savvy.

The point of the Christmas Do is to have fun team building and getting to know your colleagues but it is only going to work in your favour if you can walk into work the next day with your dignity, reputation and importantly your job still very much intact. Start the Christmas Party positively by actually turning up. Office do's should not be optional events. If you miss it you will be the one to miss out so show some team spirit and join the festivities even if it is only for a couple of hours.

Plan your outfit carefully. Ladies, avoid the plunging necklines and mini-skirts as staying away from these will ensure that you are not going to show more than you bargained for. And guys, please ensure that shirt buttons are kept in place, done up. Dipping your natural chest wig into a bowl of soup as you reach over the dinner table may not be too appetising to your colleagues opposite.

Schmooze, network, and get involved. The Christmas Office Party is the best time to talk to Jenny who you conversely email', to get to know everyone in your team and that also includes your boss- they are all people and alliances are important in the workplace. Who knows you may even make a new friend during your cringey team building event.

Drink in moderation. If you don't keep yourself in check you are likely to end up doing something you may not have wanted to in the first place. Calming your nerves with that last tequila seemed like such a good idea at the time however losing your inhibitions, singing bad karaoke, showing your knickers to Jim from Sales and puking on your boss's shoes was not.

Office Hanky Panky. An interesting one this as even Bob from Finance may seem like a charmer after the 5th tequila or so. A poll on the internet recently stated that 41% of office workers admitted to having been involved in some kind of sexual activity with a co-worker at an office party so unless you want to add to this statistic and the office gossip of course steer clear.

Be aware of what you say and choose your words wisely. This is not the time or the place to air your issues with management or to complain about your workload. The reason you are at the party in the first place is because you have a job and preferably would like to keep it, you don't want your P45 for Christmas.

Arrange transport home. Even if you are the last one standing or swaying on the dance-floor, ensure you have at least one cab number that can get you home safely- sleeping on John from Marketings' couch and then rolling into work the next day with him is not cool, unless he is a friend of course.
