Having A Smartphone Is Satisfying In So Many Ways

My friends and I were just laughing the other day about how our kids won't ever know a time when we didn't all carry our phone in our pocket

, when the answer to "Why do the New York Jets play football in New Jersey?" wasn't right at our digital fingertips, when we knew each other's phone numbers by heart because we had to dial them each time we called. It was a simpler time, but the new digital age is also an exciting one that gives us so much. There are many reasons why having a smartphone is a great thing, and here are just a few:

More than anything, I wanted a smartphone to be able to access my family's calendar when I was away from the home. There have been so many times that I have made a follow-up appointment, or scheduled the next annual dentist visit at the exact same time that we already had something planned. You might say I had an uncanny knack for that blunder. Now I'm able to check our calendar first and then tell the receptionist that I need another day before I double book appointments.

I am never bored now. I always try to bring something to do when I know I'm going to be waiting for my car to be serviced or sitting at soccer practice, but sometimes I forget my project. Now with my smartphone, there are games to be played, puzzles to be solved, access to major newspapers and magazines that I can read online and a score of other options. Sometimes I like to unplug, close my eyes and wait out whatever it is I must sit through, but other times I like to keep my mind entertained and this phone in my pocket holds the perfect solution.

So many of my friends gave me this one piece of advice when I got my first smartphone: "This will be the best emergency babysitter you ever have." They were so right! While I prefer my kids to be active and use their own imaginations most of the time, there are just some times when I need them to sit still and be quiet, and having a few kids games loaded on the phone, or letting them silently watch the mesmerizing blue dot go down the road while we drive in the car (we're the blue dot on the map function on the phone) can go a long ways in giving me some peace and quiet when it's most urgent. It's not a "mommy trick" I pull out very often, which probably means it works better when I do, but it's been a sanity saver several times.

I am never lost in a new city now. Years ago, my husband and I were driving in a new town after a round of job interviews and we were tired, lost and stressed out. We decided we'd pull over and get out the map when we got to the next intersection with a stop light, because that would be two major roads we could surely find on the map. To our surprise and then amusement, the intersection was 6th Street and 6th Avenue and we still had no idea where we were. That doesn't happen anymore if we don't want it to. Using the map function on my smartphone lets me know where I am always. Even in my own hometown I sometimes find I am not quite sure where I am, and my phone has successfully navigated me out each time.

I enjoy a good deal and am always trying to work a bargain or discount into my day's dealings. With my smartphone I can follow online daily deals while I'm away from home and have arranged for email alerts to ring my phone when a new one comes into my inbox. I never miss out on the deals that have a time limit because my phone always lets me know. Most times the deals aren't ones that suit what I'm doing for the day, but every so often something too good to pass comes along and I'm right on top of it because my handy smartphone is always connected. Regardless of whether you're looking for deals in Denver or bargains in Baltimore, it sure is nice to know I can bargain shop without missing out on the emails I used to be able to only access at home.

It was a bit of a splurge for me to upgrade from my old cell phone to this new smartphone, but it was money well spent. I feel like I'm spending my time better, more wisely using my money and life is a little easier with it. While nothing is simple like the old days (Remember paying a dime to use a pay phone?), I sure am glad I have this new technology today!
