Hawaii's North Shore a Great Winter Destination
Hawaii's North Shore a Great Winter Destination
When the long winter nights are getting you down and the cold seems to creep into your bones, don't you just want to get away? Maybe to someplace warm that has beautiful beaches and bathtub warm ocean water? Hawaii is just the spot! While Hawaii is a great place to visit any time of year, the winter months are spectacular.
So what makes Hawaii in winter so great? A little something called the North Shore. Perhaps you have heard of it? In the winter the waves on the North Shore are just phenomenal! Surfers come from all over the world to experience the famous Bonzai Pipeline and other great surfing spots on the North Shore. It is fascinating to watch the pros work the waves and surf the pipeline. On any given day you can watch dozens and sometimes hundreds of surfers hitting the waves.
But keep in mind, the surfing on the North Shore is not for beginners! The waves can be quite dangerous and there is a coral reef lying just beneath the water. It would be very painful, if not catastrophic to have a wave pound you into the coral.
However, there are places where you can venture into protected waters and snorkel or play. The water in Hawaii is bathtub warm and a beautiful blue. It is so clear you can see the bottom this makes for a perfect water playground! On the North Shore there are a few little bays that are perfect for these activities. Adjacent to the Turtle Bay Resort there is a public beach and a snorkeling bay. The water is fairly shallow and it is protected from the large waves. It is a good size bay with room for lots of visitors. Make sure you bring reef shoes, the coral is quite sharp on bare feet!
There aren't very many hotels to choose from on the North Shore other than the Turtle Bay Resort, but you can find quite a few condos for rent. Check Craig's List or do a Google search for North Shore Condos. There are many great units for rent right next to the Turtle Bay Resort. You will save money by going this route and since they include a kitchen you will save on food as well!
While visiting, you need to make sure and stop at one of the many Shrimp Trucks you will see. There are quite a few shrimp farms along the main highway between Laie and Turtle Bay and there are old delivery vans that have been converted to lunch wagons near them. You can get a plate of fresh shrimp cooked in a wide variety of ways. Be adventurous and try something new, although I strongly recommend the garlic butter variety!
A visit to the North Shore of Oahu is very different from the bustling life of Waikiki. While Waikiki is full of life and excitement, the North Shore is very relaxed and peaceful. However, I would recommend spending a few nights in both places so you can appreciate the difference.
A trip to Hawaii is heaven on earth, and a trip to the North Shore in winter is absolutely stunning! Start planning your trip now, you will never regret it.
