HDL cholesterol is another name for good cholesterol

. The opposite of that is LDL cholesterol and is actually bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol is linked to conditions such as strokes, heart attacks and heart disease and therefore it is important that you do what you can to lower your bad cholesterol and raise your HDL levels.

The ideal solution would be to lower your LDL cholesterol, raise your HDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides. It is the balance of it all that is essential. You should not focus on one element and ignore the others as this can be risky. By balancing the both you are helping your body to stay healthy and fighting off potential diseases.

By raising your HDL cholesterol you will actually start to lower and clear away your LDL levels. What happens when you raise your good cholesterol is it takes the LDL out of plaque, drives it down to the liver and then the liver begins to break it down. Once broken down it passes through your body. The diminishing plaque growth is what helps prevent heart disease.

It is important to get rid of the plaque build up as it narrows your blood vessels and over time will block blood flow which leads to coronary artery disease. Increasing your HDL cholesterol levels stops this from happening. So, how can a person increase their good cholesterol while lowering their bad?


First, begin a regular exercise regimen, preferably 3 times a day. Second, add healthy foods to your diet such as oatmeal, whole grains, oat bran and fruits and vegetables which are rich in fiber. Third, avoid high carbohydrate foods which are processed such as simple sugars. These actually lower good cholesterol. Fourth, avoid high fat foods that contain trans fat and hydrogenated oils such as chips and cookies. It is best to check with your doctor on a regular basis to have your cholesterol levels checked as well. By following a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise, you will begin to increase your HDL cholesterol and lower your LDL cholesterol which will even out your cholesterol to a nice balance.
