In modern culture, it is not uncommon to see women who wear not only a wedding ring

or engagement ring on their finger, but also an anniversary ring or eternity ring. Anniversary rings are given by husbands to their wives to commemorate a special date, which may vary between couples.

What is an anniversary ring?

Any ring that is given to mark an anniversary of some kind is an anniversary ring. They usually follow a particular style, however. It might come in the form of an eternity ring, which is a band that has gems inset all around it. It may come in the popular three-stone style. The most commonly chosen variety is a band in a simple style that fits in with the wedding ring and the engagement ring, and features a line of stones along the top. The stones may be diamonds or other gems.

It is up to the couple to decide if they would prefer diamonds or gems. Some go for diamonds to complement their engagement ring and wedding ring. Others find creative ways to incorporate birthstones for months that bear significance in their personal history, be it the month in which they held their wedding, the birth months of the couple or their children, or something else.

There isn't a set time or reason for giving an anniversary ring. It might be given on the first anniversary of a couple's wedding, or the 23rd anniversary. Usually the cost of these rings means that couples tend to buy them only on very special anniversaries, such as 10th, 20th, 25th or 50th. Other occasions which might be celebrated with an anniversary ring include the day of the couple's first kiss, the day of their engagement, a time when they experienced a breakthrough in their marriage, or their first child's birth.

How to wear an anniversary ring:

How the ring is worn will vary according to individual taste and preference. Many women will wear their anniversary rings alongside their wedding set, on the fourth finger of her left hand. If an anniversary ring is particularly elaborate, however, it may be worn on the right hand to balance out the left. If the original wedding set is getting old and worn, or if it is to be preserved as a family heirloom, then a woman may choose to replace the wedding set altogether.

Precautions to take in the care of your anniversary ring:

It is important to look after the ring to keep in good condition, and there are a few steps you can take to ensure this. Take the ring off when cleaning the house or doing any activity that might cause it to become scratched, worn or exposed to harsh chemicals. Keep it in a safe place away from other jewelry, and clean it every now and then with a soft cloth and a gentle cleanser.
