Headache or Migraine? What's the Difference?

Headache or Migraine? What's the Difference?

Do you have a headache or a migraine? It can actually be difficult to tell, but because both are treated a bit differently, it's important to learn the difference between the two.

When you've got an aching feeling or a pounding in your head, you may not care whether your pain is classified as a headache or a migraine. However, the treatment of both types of headaches can vary, which is why it's actually a very good idea to learn how to tell if you've got a headache or if you're dealing with a migraine. There are quite often people who believe that they merely have a headache and get frustrated when it doesn't go away, when the pain in their head isn't from a headache but is actually from a migraine. There are actually a few ways that you can tell if you're dealing with a headache or a more serious condition, a migraine.

Headaches

We all get headaches occasionally. Some people are prone to getting a headache when they're dealing with a great deal of stress, while others get headaches that are connected with the humidity in the weather, and still some get headaches when they're simply tired or for no real reason. Headaches can be in any part of your head, the front, the back, or on the sides. Most often, though, a headache tends to relate to one entire hemisphere of the brain, most often the front or the back. Headaches can be all through the skull or can be in front or in back but aren't generally found on one side or the other. With most headaches you can achieve some relief from taking pain medications like ibuprofen or Tylenol.

Migraines

A migraine is much different from a headache, although at first it may seem like they're both similar because they both cause a pain in the head. While you wouldn't need to see a pain specialist for a headache, you may be required to see a pain specialist if you are dealing with recurring migraines.

There are different types of migraines, for instance while some people get sick to their stomach when they have a migraine, others don't. But most migraines tend to leave people with some amount of light sensitivity. This photosensitivity can vary from minor to severe, but pops up any time you see light, no matter whether it is artificial light or natural light. And many people also suffer from sound sensitivity as well, feeling as though someone is yelling at them when the other person is merely talking in a normal tone of voice.

Migraines tend to be on one side of the head or the other, and while you may get a bit of relief from over-the-counter pain medications, the relief usually doesn't last. If you are someone who is suffering from recurring migraines, a visit to a migraine specialist may help you to be able to get rid of the migraines, or to get medications that can prevent a migraine from occurring if you know that you're prone to getting one within a certain amount of time.
