Headaches Behind The Eyes
Pain behind the eyes may be a symptom of different types of headaches and even other health problems
. Most commonly people complain to have an extreme one-sided headache especially involving the area around or behind one eye. This is a typical description of cluster headache. Other symptoms associated with cluster headache are eye redness or tearing, smaller pupil on the affected side of the face and stuffy, runny nose.
But the most common problem that causes a headache behind the eyes is related to general eye health and eye conditions or disorders. Something happens that causes the lens of the eye to cast an unfocused image on the retina. When this happens, your brain automatically tightens your eye muscles in an effort to compensate. After this has been going on for a while, the eye muscles become strained, causing soreness.If this situation corrected, the muscles become even more strained and sore.
Long sightedness, medically termed as hyperopia, is a condition where close objects appear unfocused, while distant objects are clear. The reason for this is that the light entering the eyes falls behind the retina rather than directly on it. As a result near object appear unclear and blurred, while distant object appear clear and sharp. When you are suffering from hyperopia, constant straining to view near objects closely leads to headaches behind the eyes.
Eyeglass frames can cause pressure behind the ears and on the side of the head if not properly adjusted. Frames that are tilted can alter the effective lens prescription and result in eye strain. Nickel is a common component in many metal frames (and in parts of plastic frames). Nickel allergies are fairly common and can cause discomfort, itching and possible mild headaches.
In case you are regularly suffering from stress headache is it highly recommended that you consult the doctor. It is better to inform your doctor about all your symptoms so that your doctor can diagnose the root cause behind your specific problem. Only if you can give proper details about your problem, the doctor can provide you with the proper treatment.
Your computer should be at a comfortable distance (about 30-40cm) and the top of the screen should be facing you and slightly below eye level. Adjust your desk or chair so that this is the case. Our eyes are designed to point forwards and downwards when looking at near objects, e.g. when reading. Looking upwards or sideways at your computer will rapidly lead to eye strain.
Unlike the Migraine, Cluster Headache suffers often say there is not sensitivity to light. The pain is said to be a piecing or burning type of pain. The scalp is sometimes tender and many patients are not able to sit still during an episode. Sometimes there are as much as months or maybe even years in between cluster headaches and found in some patients to occur more in the Spring and Autumn and many times are confused with allergies.
Eye strain is usually caused by your computer setup no being exactly how it should be. Make sure your chair sits your eye level near the top of the computer screen and don't ever be looking at your screen from an angle. Sit right in front of it. Adjust any computer settings you can to strain your eyes less. Brightness, contrast, resolution, coloring, and text size can all be adjusted to your preferences or what allows you to see things without squinting or tiring your eyeballs.
