Headrests And Whiplash

Whiplash is the most common injury suffered on Britains roads today

. Insurance companies may see the compensation culture as being to blame for most whiplash injury compensation claims, but if you have been unlucky enough to suffer whiplash, you will know how painful it can be.

Even minor whiplash injury can result in painful treatments, physiotherapy and ongoing health problems if it is not treated quickly. As the population of the UK increases, so does the number of car users, which leads to more whiplash accidents and injuries.

Whiplash injury commonly occurs when a car has stopped, and another vehicle runs into the back of it, causing the body to move forwards and the head to be jerked backwards. Even low-speed collisions can cause this, and a properly adjusted headrest can help reduce the impact. The snapping action, which stretches the muscles and causes pain to the neck, back and shoulders, is called whiplash. There are some things you can do to reduce whiplash injury, including:

Always keep a safe distance from the car in front. If they stop quickly, or without warning, you will have plenty of time to brake. This is particularly important when driving on a motorway, as drivers can be involved in multiple pile-ups when they run into the back of others. Most accidents of this type are caused in bad weather, and when a motorway is wet or conditions are foggy or icy, you should always keep your distance from the vehicle in front. Also, by keeping far enough back from the next vehicle, you will notice if the car behind is driving too closely to you. In case of the traffic slowing in front, this will give you plenty of room to edge forward and indicate to the driver behind that traffic is coming to a halt.

Most of us were taught in our driving test: Mirror, signal, manoeuvre, but how many of us still practice it on a daily basis when driving? If you are driving on a motorway or an A road, when traffic stops ahead, always pay attention to the driver behind you. If he is distracted he could easily plough into the back of your car if you dont give him enough notice of your intention to stop.

It is also important to check your rear view mirror if you intend to turn right or left, before you indicate, in case another vehicle is overtaking you. You can then signal safely and manoeuvre.

Make sure your headrest is properly adjusted to your height. It should be level with the top of your head, to prevent serious whiplash injury if another vehicle hits the back of yours. This will reduce impact, and also stop your head from being thrown violently backwards, which can cause severe whiplash injury.

Get into the habit of checking your headrest before you set out on a car trip, as this can seriously reduce injury in case of an accident. The headrest will give help support your neck and head in case of a collision, either from behind or head-on. If your head rest is too low, it could do more damage than good, so always make sure it is in the correct position before you set off.
