Healing After an Affair - What Could I do Differently so That They Won't Want to Have an Affair

?

When you've lived through a bad experience in life, most people tend to look back and wonder what they could have done differently and would it have made a difference. Going through the various stages of healing after an affair may set you thinking along those same lines. After suffering through all that pain and heartache, it is expected that you would want to do all you can to prevent a future affair from happening again in your marriage.

What could you do differently this time? First understand that there is never any excuse for cheating. Cheating is a choice. There was a conscious choice by one partner to start a relationship outside of the marriage. There are always better ways to deal with our relationship struggles and disappointments. As heart-rending as an affair is, sometimes it is a wake up call that your marriage is not in good shape and that lingering problems and resentments need to be addressed.

Take a good hard look at your marriage. Do you see signs of wear and tear or neglect? Over the years your marriage may have fallen into a rut and the two of you forgot how to have fun. Learn to have fun again and make your marriage a top priority.

In healing after an affair, both of you individually have a lot of internal work to do. For one thing, the cheater needs to work through their issues that made them cheat in the first place. As the injured spouse, more than likely you made mistakes and/or caused your fair share of problems in the relationship. So it's good to take a hard, painful look at yourself. Reflect on your own deficiencies, both in relation to your spouse, your marriage and in terms of what you need to improve on as a person. It is a humbling process, but it can help you save your relationship.

When you look at great relationships people have, they are the ones that were faced with many trials and tribulations but they overcame them, learned and had mutual and individual growth. None of us are perfect, we just need to be willing to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. If you and your spouse really love each other and are committed to rebuilding a better than ever marriage, then another affair will be highly unlikely and all the hurt and pain of healing after an affair would have been worth it.
