Health Alert: Another Side Effect Linked to Statins Diabetes

A recent study in the Journal of the America Medical Association discovered startling results when it came to the commonly used statin drugs (the cholesterol lowering drugs, the two most common being Liptor and Crestor). Patients who take high-dose statins face an increased risk of developing diabetes compared to lower doses. The high-dose statin group had an incredible 12% increased risk of new onset diabetes.1

This supports earlier research linking statins to diabetes. Previous research showed that statin users had a 9% higher risk of developing diabetes than those who didnt take statins. This suggests that the more statins you take, the higher the risk of developing diabetes.

The researchers said the mechanism for the findings was not yet established, but believe it could relate to a direct influence of statins on either muscles or liver insulin action.

This is not to suggest that patients currently on statin drugs should stop taking them. But, it is important that they are aware of the new and harmful side effects linked to the drug so that you can discuss them with your personal doctor. It is increasingly evident that controlling cholesterol before the need for statin drugs arises is the best course of action.
