Health Benefits of Stretching
Stretching is the act in which the body or any particular part of the body is extended to its full length with the intention of flexing the muscles and making the body flexible. Stretching is a part of our daily routine and we stretch a lot during the day while performing a number of activities. Our body should be flexible enough to stretch while performing our daily chores like bending and picking up a book or standing on tiptoe to reach out for something which is kept on the top of the shelf.
Stretching is an easy exercise to perform since it involves the straightening of the structure of the limbs. As we grow older, our muscles tighten and as a result our movements are not as easy and free as they are at a younger age. As a result, with the advancement of age our ability to bend and stretch is hindered and so is our ability to move our joints to the fullest extent possible. Therefore, it is extremely essential to stretch on a regular basis, especially since it is so easy that it can be incorporated as a part of our daily routine. The act of stretching is used as a preparation by athletes for performing more complicated and strenuous exercises and therefore should not be carried out for more than ten minutes at the beginning of the practice session.
There are many health benefits of stretching and they are listed as follows:
Stretching is the best way to overcome muscular pains and problems as it greatly reduces the muscle tension which arises due to the contraction of muscle. If the muscles are not moved and are allowed to remain stationary for a long period of time they start decaying and therefore resist movement. However, if they are subjected to stretching exercises on a daily basis they remain flexible and therefore active and healthy.
One of the main health benefits of stretching is that it contributes to the physical fitness of the individual by causing the limbs and joints to move in all the possible directions. Since stretching involves extending the muscles to their maximum possible limit, daily performance of the stretching exercises results in an increase in the length of the muscles and subsequently broadening of the range of movement.
Daily stretching not only energizes the body but also makes the individual mentally alert and confident of his ability to perform many different types of tasks. This in turn results in increased awareness about one's body in terms of its functions and capabilities.
Among the various health benefits of stretching the most important benefit is the healthy and active life style which an individual leads due to an enhancement in the range of movement and muscular coordination. This enables one to move freely when required like running to catch a train, playing a sport or improving on the one which one plays on a regular basis.
The health benefits of stretching exercises like yoga result in the reduction of the cholesterol levels within the body and when combined with a healthy diet it could greatly reduce the probability of heart diseases and coronary blockages.
Stretching helps the muscles and tendons to remain in good working order as a result of which they remain flexible and are capable of performing more exhaustive and rigorous movements without sustaining any injuries. Regular stretching exercises also ensure that if the muscles do get injured, their excellent physical condition makes them resilient due to which their recovery is faster and with relatively lesser amount of pain.
Stretching results in increased circulation of blood to various parts of the body thus improving the over all health of an individual.
It is a time less belief that if you are kind to your muscles, then your muscles will also be kind to you. Therefore exercising our muscles in a way which comes naturally to all of us evidently imparts an excellent feeling of being alive. This is the reason why stretching should be incorporated as a part of our daily routines so that we can enjoy the fruits of an active life-style even during our old age.
