We all need to be more conscious about the amount of fat we have in our diets
, George Foreman realised this fact and acted accordingly. George Foreman was a remarkable heavyweight boxing champion who was the oldest man to win the heavyweight championship. He knew some healthy eating tricks that enabled him to achieve the sporting victories he is famous for.
Fat is split into two types saturated and non-saturated, and within these types the fats are split down further into many more types. To clarify the situation with fat saturated, trans-fats or hydrogenated are bad for you and non-saturated are good fatty acids.
Non-saturated fat has two main types - polyunsaturated and monounsaturated and these types of fat contain omega 3, 6 and 9. Omegas are very good for us and essential for the maintenance of healthy skin, the immune system and brain/vision development to name only a few benefits. It is known that omegas 3 and 6 have a part to play in reproductive health and the development of the unborn foetus. Studies suggest that babies born from omega healthy parents have a greater level of intelligence and better vision.
Polyunsaturated fat is found in mackerel and oily fish or vegetable sources such as sunflower oil or seeds, nuts and green leafy vegetables. This type of fat can reduce cholesterol levels. Monounsaturated also reduces cholesterol levels and is found in food items such as nuts, avocados, rapeseed and olive oil. Diets that have sufficient amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats have lower incidences of high cholesterol and diabetes.
Saturated fats are found in foods that come from animals such as butter, milk, red meats and cheese. Examples are cakes and steaks or sausages and burgers. Excessive levels of saturated fat in the diet can be the cause of high cholesterol, obesity, heart disease and diabetes. People who eat a lot of saturated fat may have fat bodies and the fatter we get the harder our organs have to work. A diet high in saturated fat can make us feel sluggish and unhealthy or look spotty. These are the reasons we should try to cut back on the amount of saturated fats we eat.
It is all down to healthy limitations and plenty of exercise; it is not a good idea to cut out fat altogether or to go on a fat free diet. New studies are coming out to suggest that fat is not as bad as previously thought it is the amount of fat we consume that is important.
Thanks to George Foreman who has developed a special griddle we can still enjoy the meats containing saturated fats as the cooking method removes a lot more of the saturates compared to other methods. Saturated fat is the offending item and the cause of many health concerns, we currently do not know enough about fat and the part it plays to our health and in our diet. Until more research has been carried out we must act now and cut out some of the bad fats from our food.
