Health Issues Associated With Mold
Mold is a growing problem in all parts of the country
. While mold tends to thrive in humid, warm climates, it can crop up in just about any building if the conditions are conducive to mold growth. Mold typically results from an overly damp environment coupled with negligence on the part of building owners in properly identifying the mold problem before it becomes a serious issue. One mold takes hold a building's occupants or other users will have their health compromised. For this reason, mold remediation is necessary once mold contamination has set in.
Mold remediation is the process of removing mold in a contaminated structure. It is an expanding industry because of the growing awareness of the serious health problems that can be associated with mold contamination. There are a number of techniques involved in mold remediation that will be discussed below. But first the health issues that make mold remediation necessary will be outlined.
Health Issues Associated with Mold
One of the more common effects of mold contamination is allergies. Many species of mold cause allergies because our bodies recognize the mold spores as foreign invaders. This triggers the body's immune response.
Mold allergies can range from mild to life-threatening. In most cases mold allergies are a nuisance more than a real health threat. Symptoms of mold allergies include watery eyes, sneezing and itchiness. Symptoms of more serious mold allergies include trouble breathing and vomiting.
Growing research has indicated that long-term exposure to mold and the accompanying allergic response can cause more permanent immune issues in some people. These issues can include autoimmune disorders. Autoimmune disorders are a range of disease in which the body attacks itself. In some causes autoimmune disease can be fatal.
Another potential long-term health problem from mold allergies is a weakened immune system. A weakened immune system is kind of like the opposite problem as autoimmune disorders. In autoimmune disease, the body's immune system is in overdrive. But in a weakened immune system, the body's immune system is not working hard enough. A weakened immune system leave the body open to any kind of opportunistic infections and even cancers.
Because of all the serious health issues associated with mold contamination, mold remediation is more important than ever. Just what is mold remediation and what processes are involved?
Mold Remediation
The first stage of mold remediation is identifying the nature of the mold problem. During this stage, mold specialists will arrive on-site to inspect the building. Oftentimes the mold specialists will discover a greater extent of mold contamination than the owners were aware of. This is why early treatment is so critical - what the owner sees and the actual extent of the contamination are not necessarily the same thing. The mold specialist will try to identify the type of mold(s) involved, so they can suggest the building be shut down if necessary.
The next step in mold remediation is to treat the problem. In very severe cases entire parts of buildings have to be destroyed and rebuilt. Anything from special vacuums to disinfecting wipes can be used to remove mold damage. Extreme care is taken during this stage of the mold remediation process to avoid accidentally spreading the mold or introducing the mold into the building's HVAC system.
The final step in
Mold remediation is to educate the building's owners on how to prevent problems from becoming serious in the future. With a few simple and cheap steps, mold contamination is effectively prevented.
