When exercising, make sure to create a routine that is tailored to his capabilities. Instead of taking your dog out for a long walk take him/her out for several short walks a day.

Diet Changes

Your dog's metabolism slows down as he/she grows older. Thus, his/her calorie requirements decrease by as much as 20%. You should lessen the amount of food you feed your dog because otherwise, your dog will gain weight and possibly suffer from obesity problems. Your older dog also requires less fat and more fiber particularly he/she is not eating properly or is suffering from a medical ailment. Usually diet supplements are required.

Constipation

Dogs' digestive system also slows down as they age, thus older dogs also suffer from constipation. Exercise can help relieve constipation. But, if your dog's constipation is severe, take him/her to your vet at once. Your vet may prescribe a diet rich in fiber or laxatives. Do not forget to give your dog plenty of water.

Dental Care

Older dogs may suffer from dental problems. If not checked early on, these dental problems may cause complications that can endanger your dog's life. Make sure your old dog receives proper dental care. Brush his/her teeth regularly and take him/her to your vet for regular dental checkups and professional cleaning.

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a little hard to detect in an old dog. This is why you should be more attentive to your pet. See if there are any changes in your old dog's behavior. If he/she does not pay attention to strangers or if he/she does not respond to your commands, there is a good chance that he/she is losing his/her hearing. Teach your dog to respond to visual signals while he/she is still young. Stomping on the floor or clapping your hands are visible communications you can use to get his/her attention. You may also use a flashing yard light when you want your dog to come to you.
