The Indian Factories Act, 1948 made detailed provisions in regard to various matters relating to health & safety of the workers. These provisions impose upon the occupiers or managers certain obligations, to protect workers unwary as well as negligence from accidents and to secure for them in employment conditions conductive to their health & safety. These provisions also require the occupiers or managers to maintain inspection staff and to make provision for maintenance of health, cleanliness, prevention of overcrowding and amenities like lighting, ventilation, drinking water, etc.
Sections 11 to 20 of the Factories Act deal with the provisions ensuring the health of the workers in the conditions under which work is carrying in the factories. These provisions are summarized as follows:
Cleanliness (Sec.11):
Every factory should be kept clean and free from effluvia-from drain and privy refuse, and from dirt. It should be white washed at least once in 14 months or painted at least once in five years. Floors should be swept and cleaned, at least once every week, with some disinfecting fluid.
Disposal of Waste and Effluents (Sec.12):
Effective arrangements should be made for their disposal and/ or treatment.
Ventilation and Temperatures (Sec.13):
Provision should be made for the circulation of fresh air, and temperature should be maintained by building walls and roofs of such materials as would keep it within reasonable limits. High temperature may be controlled by white washing, spraying and insulating the factory premises and by screening outside walls, roofs and windows.
Dust and fume (Sec.14):
Effective measures should be taken to prevent, or at any rate reduce, the inhalation and accumulation of dust and fumes. Exhaust appliances should be used near the point of the origin of dust and fumes.
Lighting (Sec.17):
Sufficient and suitable lighting, natural or artificial or both, should be made available in the factory premises.
Overcrowding:
No room should be overcrowded. There should be at least 500 cuffs of space for every worker.
Drinking Water (Sec.18):
A sufficient quantity of cool drinking water should be made available for the employees throughout the year, particularly during the hot summer months.
Privy (Sec.19):
Adequate latrines and urinals should be separately provided for men and women employees.
Spittoons (Sec.20):
In every factory, there shall be provided a sufficient number of spittoons in convenient places and they shall be maintained in a clean and hygienic condition.
First Aid Appliances:
There should be an adequate number of boxed containing first aid materials, qualified personnel to administer first aid, and an ambulance or at least a room where an injured employee may be given first aid.
Objective:
The nature of study conducted to analyze the safety & health programmers conducted by the management and the satisfactory levels of the employees is exploratory in nature because the research is primarily undertaken to identify the problems and to discover more ideas and insights about the problems faced by the employees.
To know the role of HR in Health and Safety procedure.
To evaluate the different stages involved in the Health and Safety process of Aurobindo Pharma.
To know the personnel involved in the man-power planning.
To know the major source of identification of candidates in Health and Safety process.
To study different criterions involved in the short listing of the candidates.
To check the extent of involvement of the superiors in the Health and Safety process.
To know the different procedures followed by the safety dept. in the Health and Safety
Process at different levels.
Limitations
1) Time was the major constraint that limited the extent of the study.
2) The study is limited to main departments from the main stream of the organization. All the departments were not covered under the study.
3) Response of employees had been obtained with some difficulty because of their busy schedule and few of the employees were hesitant and not very conversant.
4) Researcher had own personal limitations to do justice and claim academic perfection.
Research and development:
The company's R&D strengths are in developing intellectual property in the area of non-infringing process and resolving complex chemistry challenges. In the process, Aurabindo pharma is developing new drug delivery systems, new dosage formulations, applying new technology for better processes. The APL research center, located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, is busy in making knowledge intensive initiatives.
The centre covers an area of 100,000 square feet, and provides a nurturing environment to a multi-disciplinary team of over 450 scientists striving for excellence. The centre meets cGLP requirements, and is focused on the area of organic synthesis, analytical research, dosage form development, pharmacology, bio-equivalence studies and drug delivery systems.
The instrumentation and analytical knowledge base at the centre facilitate:
Process development life cycles of less that three months, even if it involves complex step synthesis with multiple chirality's.
Complete impurity profiling in all products developed.
Development of analytical methods and specifications from raw materials, to non-compendia finished products.
In-house synthesis of reagents for analyzing organo lithium's and noble metals.
Accelerated and real time stability studies.
All this reflects the company's commitment towards developing innovative technologies and creating a knowledge base in chemical synthesis, high quality generic formulation and development of drug delivery system.
