Health & Safety jobs exist in most companies except the very smallest. Any company with more than 5 employees needs to have a Health & Safety policy and of course as they grow and expand businesses ultimately need to take on full time staff to manage this area.

As a Health & Safety Officer, you be responsible for preventing accidents, injuries and health issues at work. The cornerstone of good Health & Safety practise is a sound and robust policy. Once you have an effective policy in place you can work to ensure that staff follow safety directives and legislation to ensure the workplace is as safe as possible.

Health and Safety jobs vary enormously depending on who you work for. Some organisations are mostly office based, so your role but mainly revolve around safety issues concerning the safe use of computer workstations plus fire and some manual handling. But in some industries you may be responsible for staff who work with potentially dangerous machinery or hazardous chemicals for example. Which present a whole different set of challenges.

Health and Safety jobs can be extremely challenging and rewarding. They give you the chance to make a real difference in the workplace and it's very satisfying work helping to create a healthier and safer environment for everybody. In addition to developing policy, safety offices must conduct inspections and risk assessments, keep accident records, issue protective clothing and equipment, carry regular safety training, investigate and learn from accidents, write reports and keep up to date with all the latest government regulation and legislation.

In smaller companies, the role of safety officer might be part of someone's wider remit, but any organisations of a reasonable size will have dedicated Health & Safety staff and recruit accordingly.
