Health Safety Leicester - What To Look For
There's nothing you don't know about Health & Safety issues and you're near enough 100 per cent sure all your colleagues are safe when they're working
. After all, you've been working in construction on sites across Leicester and other areas around the UK for many, many years.
You may think you know everything there is to know about health and safety when you're working on sites in Leicester or other towns or cities but latest statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) suggest otherwise.
Figures show that during a national health and safety initiative to improve construction site safety, nearly one in five construction sites failed safety checks. This was only a slight improvement on previous years. So, maybe it's time to revisit your health and safety procedures. Could your sites around Leicester and across the UK be at risk?
HSE inspectors visited 3,237 sites during their health and safety checks and saw 4,080 contractors, with 581 sites found to have practices that put its workers at risk. Just imagine how you and your colleagues would feel if your Leicester site was among these. Doesn't bear thinking about, does it?
In total 870 enforcement notices were issued during this health and safety check. From these, 603 of these meant work had to stop immediately on site. In Leicester, just as in many other areas across the UK, construction is a regular feature of city life. But just how many of these sites are operating safely?
Health and safety inspectors chose sites where refurbishment or repair work was being carried out as part of an annual month-long drive across the UK, including cities like Leicester, to help reduce risk of death, injury and ill health.
This health and safety initiative focused on high-risk activities like working at height and included checks to see that sites were in 'good order', being clean and tidy with clear access routes.
Falls from height are one of the most common causes of deaths and major injury, being responsible for the largest proportion of health and safety enforcement notices - about 49 per cent. In 2010 this stood at 55 per cent so there has been an improvement. Wherever you're working - it may be Leicester or anywhere else in the UK - it's important to ensure your construction site is looking after the welfare of its workforce.
