Health and Safety Advisor Replacement Still an Uncertainty
It currently remains unclear as to whether anyone will take over the role of health and safety advisor to the governmentfollowing the recent resignation of Lord Young.
A spokesperson from number 10 stated that she was unsure as to whether there would be a replacement for the role. "He has stepped down as enterprise tsar, his role as health and safety advisor ended when he finished his report" The report was given earlier in the year and created a lot of controversy about his knowledge and expertise as a health and safety proposal. He also alleged in his report that Health and Safety didnt need to be so regulated and have so many "ridiculous rulings" and that a lot of it should be down to personal judgement and common sense within the workforce. This met with a lot of controvery as many people argue the fact that it is peoples judgement that causes many of the health and safety risks that can be posed in the workplace on a daily basis.
Lord Young had previously promised that he would oversee his proposed reforms from start to finish which he had highlighted in his report. His report included such schemes as; a registration scheme for safety consultants and revisions to health and safety law.
Lord Young vowed that his report would not just end up on a shelf "My job over the next year is to make sure it is implemented."
His resignation will take effect immediately and it follows the controversy he created on the 18th November. He stated that "most Britons had never had it so good" despite the recession. Number 10 have stated that he reflected over his position overnight and offered his resignation to the prime minister in the morning, who accepted.
He launched the report last month which was entitled "common Sense, Common Safety" and the report promised to curb the perception of a compensation culture in the UK.
