If you own a business or are in charge of a premises then the health and safety of everyone there is in your hands. Whilst no one is suggesting that you can be responsible for everyone and can make sure that no one gets hurt, you do have a responsibility to do what you can to keep people safe.
Now it is likely that you don't have the expertise in health and safety that you need to properly asses a building and know what is needed, no one would expect you too. However that isn't an excuse to let a building be unsafe or just to ignore what needs doing.

They can asses buildings and look at the set up that you have currently and advise what you need to do to improve things. They will know the legalities regarding health and safety and what you have an obligation to do and be able to advise regarding this.
Whilst you may feel that health and safety consultants are an expense that you could do without, there are many merits to hiring their services. Firstly you know that you have fulfilled your legal obligation with health and safety and you know that the people in your building are going to be safe and sound.
Bear in mind that if someone has an accident in your premises and it is down to your negligence then you can be sued and this can be much more expensive than hiring the services of some health and safety consultants. So don't just look at the cost of consultants and assume that it is something you could do without, because in the long run you could find yourself spending out much more than it would have cost just to get a team of health and safety consultants out to your premises to give you health and safety advice.
