Healthcare And Safety At Nighttime And Shifting Jobs
A nighttime job is no easy task
A nighttime job is no easy task. Unlike in a typical daytime job, a nighttime job poses a lot of hazards, especially to the workers health. From the danger of being hit by a vehicle or heavy equipment during nighttime road repair work to falling from high places at a high-rise apartment construction site, the risk of getting involved in an accident during nighttime work is extremely high.
Apart from the risk of high accident occurrence, nighttime work also makes a person more prone to contracting diseases. Some studies have shown that nighttime jobs can cause delayed sleep phase disorder, which makes it difficult for a person to go to sleep and wake up at the right times. A 2007 study conducted by an agency for cancer research said that people who are involved in nighttime have a much higher risk of developing heart-related diseases and cancer.
Unfortunately, nighttime work, including shift work, cannot be avoided. With the worlds economies and businesses interconnected regardless of time zone, business activities are expected to extend into the night and continue up to the early morning hours. There are also certain types of jobs, such as construction work and road repairs, that would be more convenient to do at night due to lighter vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This reality means some people would still have to do nighttime work despite the risks.
Fortunately for employers, measures are now being taken in order to reduce the risks involved in doing nighttime work. For instance, employers now allot a budget for protective gear for their employees. This gear usually includes a
high visibility vest, which is useful for workers involved in construction and road work. On the other hand, employees of business process outsourcing firms are provided with night differential pay and health insurance.
The development of protective gear such as the
high visibility shirt and the concept behind night differential pay and health insurance are the results of a movement to reduce the risks involved in nighttime and shift work. This is also a move by employers to make their employees feel that they are well taken care of.
From a
high visibility shirt and other forms of protective gear to the concept of night differential pay, nighttime and shift work have now become friendlier and safer for workers. Employees in such jobs can now say that, truly, big businesses care.
