Healthy Eating "Blues"

Do you find yourself making a resolution to start a healthy eating regime but whenever "that day" approaches for you to begin a lifestyle of healthy eating, you no longer have the determination to fulfil this goal? In fact, you may try to set another date and you convince yourself that you will be ready to make changes to your eating habits then; however, this merely becomes a vicious cycle!

Identifying and acknowledging the reasons can be your first step towards getting rid of those "healthy eating blues"!

The word "Diet"

While some people are blessed with a body that does not gain weight regardless of what they eat, most of us struggle with weight issues. We love to enjoy good food and very often the word "diet" can sound like "torture" or "deprivation of food"! This can be one of the key reasons why we postpone the idea of starting a regime of healthy eating. Junk food and other high calorie foods seem to satisfy the taste palette while the thought of eating a well-balanced low calorie meal seems boring and unfulfilling. Unfortunately, eating too much high calorie meals is unhealthy and it is the main cause for obesity. If you love food it is a natural reaction for your brain to convince you that changing your eating habits is going to take a lot of hard work on your part. However, if you do not do anything to change your eating habits, you will continue to pile on those extra kilos.

Solution

Remove the word "diet" from your mind; replace it with "healthy eating". Do not make a radical jump from eating junk food to eating raw vegetables. Do not skip meals as this will only make you eat more during another meal. Eat one of your favourite foods during one meal and incorporate healthy food for the rest of the other meals. By doing this you will slowly get your taste buds and your stomach to adjust to eating foods which are low in sugar and fat. Detoxification is sometimes helpful as it removes toxins from the body and it can also prepare your taste palette to taste foods which are bland. Eating fewer calories and smaller portions throughout the day will curb your appetite; drink lots of water. Take your time to eat your meal; people who eat rapidly get hungry quickly!

You are what you eat

As an adult, you are responsible for your well-being and food choices. Although some medical conditions can make a person gain weight, very often weight gain is related to poor eating habits. We eat to live and not live to eat! Your weight gain is the result of the food choices that you make. Unhealthy eating habits are the choice that you make for yourself. Eating junk food on a regular basis causes you to gain weight and it is not healthy for your lifestyle. Let us face it; the longer you wait to start a healthy eating regime, the more disheartened you will feel to shed all those extra kilos that you had gained.

Solution

You do not have to deprive yourself of good food but you can always make healthy choices. There is a variety of good healthy food that you can find in supermarkets and even in restaurants; it is up to you to make them a part of your eating regime. For example, if you love eating ice-cream, try eating frozen yogurt instead; they taste just as great as ice-cream but they have fewer calories. Make healthy eating a part of your lifestyle and give yourself a treat with junk food from time to time. This will allow your body to get the satisfaction that it needs and you will not feel deprived of the food that you love.

Deal with the issue deep within

Overeating and cravings for junk food is very often associated with emotional issues deep within the heart. You do not have the motivation or determination to start a healthy eating regime because you think that giving up junk food will make you feel more miserable than you already are. When you are dealing with a deep emotional pain, the stir-fried vegetables and grilled fish on your plate can look uninviting and unsatisfying. You are tempted to feed yourself with a double cheese burger, French fries and a large chocolate milk shake!

Solution

You need to deal with and resolve the issue deep within your heart before you attempt to change your eating habits. As long as you try to carry on in life with emotional issues that have not been dealt with, you can go around in circles with your desire to make healthy eating a part of your lifestyle. Seek the help of a counsellor if necessary; you will be surprised when you realize that your poor eating habits are a result of an emotional pain that has been buried deep within your heart.

Conclusion

Give yourself time to change your eating habits; if it took you 2 years to gain all that weight while enjoying all the junk food, do not expect to shed all those extra kilos overnight! By eating healthy, you will do yourself and your body a big favour! You will start to feel energized and you will look at yourself in a whole new light; you will feel more confident with the way you look and feel both inside and out. It is now up to you to make healthy eating a part of lifestyle!
