The other day I watched an interview on television between a non-Christian reporter and a Christian woman. The reporter asked her, "How did you escape from the building when so many people did not?" She answered, "The Lord spoke to me to turn around and leave the building as soon as I started walking up the stairs to go to my office." The reporter had a smirky look on his face as if to say, "Yeah, right. You're crazy, lady."
The truth is that God, who is our Creator, does speak to all of His creation. He speaks all the time, in a variety of ways. It doesn't mean that all people will always hear Him, but He does talk to us, and we need to understand His ways
"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned." - 1 Corinthians 2:14
So how does God speak to us?
God speaks through the written word, which is His love letter to us. This is the "logos" or general word. God wants us to know His plans and His principles and who He is.
God speaks through a "rhema" word. This is a specific word for our "right now" needs. It can come through a specific scripture in the Bible or it can be a word given to us through another person.
God speaks through our spirit. A word from God comes from His Spirit to our spirits. We hear God's voice as an inner witness. It's like a sixth sense or an intuition.
God speaks through dreams. He shows us our conditions, gives us warnings, illustrates a point He wants to make, and reveals steps to a path He has for us.
God speaks through visions. A vision is when we see something that is similar to viewing a movie screen sometimes with our eyes closed, other times when our eyes are open and we see with our "spirit."
God speaks through angelic visitations. "And hospitality do not forget; for by this some, being not aware of it, have entertained angels."- Hebrews 13:2. God will send messages to us through angels.
God speaks through prophets. A prophet of God is someone who operates in one (or more) of the five biblical offices Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Preacher, Teacher. He or she can speak a rhema word into our lives for edification and counsel.
God speaks through the counsel of Godly men and women. "When there is no helping suggestion the people will have a fall, but with a number of wise guides they will be safe." Proverbs 11:14
God speaks through circumstances. Gideon and Jonah are two excellent examples of this.
10. God speaks through an audible voice. This is a rare occasion, but it can happen. God uses this method when He has an urgent word to convey, especially in the event of a dangerous circumstance.
Whatever situation or condition you may be facing today, you need to know deeply that God loves you and will help you through it. Give Him your focus and attention so that other things in life are not drowning out His voice. Do not doubt His promises, but only believe that the God of the Universe knows your every thought and every need and He wants to commune with you 24/7. Open your spiritual heart to allow Him to guide you on your journey through this life He is speaking to YOU!
