Hearing Loss And The Hearing Aid

So many people ignore early signs of hearing loss

, and the potential benefits of a hearing aid. They ignore it in their children, and they ignore it in themselves. Most people don't seek help for as much as seven years after they suspect a problem. If you suspect that your baby or child has trouble with their aural sense from an injury, or even from a genetic condition, it is important to get it checked out.

Don't take hearing for granted. We can do better for our children. In young people, the effects of loss can be reversed with a hearing aid, but first you must test them.

Conductive, sensorineural, and mixed are the most common types. Conductive problems may be because of ear wax, a tumor, perforated ear drum, something foreign in the ear, ear infection, fluid, or even a malformation of the ear. Basically sound is being blocked by something. Sensorineural problems are from damage. Something like exposure to loud noise, genetic hearing loss, drugs that harm your ability to hear, head trauma, and aging. Mixed loss is a mixture of both conductive and sensorineural loss. Some types of loss are helped more than others by a hearing aid.

Once you decide to go in for testing you will most likely take a test with your family doctor or pediatrician. They will run a basic hearing test. With those results your doctor and you will decide what to do next. If your doctor sends you to an audiologist the next step for adults and children alike is not scary at all. The audiologist will want to perform another test. This test is more sensitive with patients in a sound proof booth. For children they may have lights or sounds coupled with dancing animals that help reinforce their participation. For adults you will likely participate without these techniques. You will hear a series of tones through your headphones and will signal that you heard them by raising your hand. The audiologist will keep track of what tones you are able to hear. They may also do a tympanometry test to see how your ear responds to sound as part of their evaluation.

Once you get past the testing phase you will find out what your hearing loss means. What type it is, and recommended treatments. If a hearing aid is suggested you will want to discuss costs, model options, and what to expect. It is important to understand that these devices cannot repair your sense. These marvelous little tools are designed simply to help amplify sound. It may take a while to get used to the way things sound, but you will get used to it soon enough.
