Hearing loss is a serious problem
Hearing loss is a serious problem. When the ability to hear is lost, a person becomes depressed, less confident, dependant and personally, physically, emotionally and professionally inactive. The good news is that most of the hearing impairment is treatable while the solution to most other types of hearing impairment is to wear a hearing aid.
The inability to hear occurs when there is a problem with one or more part of the ear/s. When a person suffers from a hearing loss, he/she may find it difficult to hear low sounds, tones or voices. The various causes of hearing loss are:
Age: When individuals age, changes take place in them physically, mentally and emotionally. One of the physical changes is the loss of hearing. By the time, a person is 40 years old, inner cells in the ear begin to function less. By the mid-sixties, the person finds it difficult to hear sounds such as voices on the phone, small sounds or everyday sounds such as speech. Hearing loss can sometimes lead to complete deafness in elderly people.
Noise: The main reason for the loss of hearing in children and adults is the exposure to noise. Noise pollution can lead to diminished hearing ability but the person will not know this until the impairment reaches a high level. People working as firefighters, construction workers, police officers, miners are prone to hearing loss due to the high level of noise that they experience each day.
Others: The other causes of hearing loss are ear infections, diseases, hereditary and certain medications.
The three main types of hearing losses that affects different parts of the ear are:
Conductive hearing loss- The causes of this type of hearing loss are ear infections, the buildup of earwax or due to cold. If this is not treated, it will lead to permanent hearing loss.
Sensorineural hearing loss This type occurs due to old age, noise, diseases (mumps, meningitis, rubella) and due to certain medications. This type of hearing loss is permanent and with the help of hearing aids, people can hear well.
Mixed hearing loss- This is a combination of type 1 and type 2 hearing loss. In this case, surgery can treat Conductive hearing loss and hearing aids can help minimize the effect of Sensorineural hearing loss.
If there is any suspicion of a person suffering from hearing loss, he/she can meet a professional and take an audiogram test. The test will give the details of the degree of hearing loss in each ear, if any. The audiologists will advice the kind of hearing aid that a person requires to set right the impairment. The hearing aid devices are a blessing for all the people suffering from hearing impairment.
An individual can choose the model, colour and type of hearing aid that he/she needs. Most important of all, the device should fit perfectly in the ears of the person. Styles available are Behind the ears, Micro-completely in the canal, In the canal, Half shell and Full shell.
