Hearing Test For The Infants

This test helps the audiologist in studying and examines for the better results, it also helps in get to know the actual hearing range of the infant and provides assistance in understanding what the impact of problem is on infant future. We all know that there are very less chances or possibilities of the infants born with hearing issues, it's just around one in a thousand and the main reason behind this test is to identify these infants, basically this type of hearing test implement on the two year old or just about the same age category toddlers.

Different types of Hearing Test

There are mainly two types of tests which are used for two year old or more or less of the same age group and the tests are ABR-Auditory Brainstem Response and OCE-Otoacoustic Emissions. The main advantage of these tests are noninvasive and doesn"t give any pain during the test while the baby rests quietly

ABR - Auditory Brainstem Response: This test consists of the electrodes that are placed on the head and record all the electrical activity in the brain, nerve cells for hearing in reaction to sounds. Basically these test able to find out the complication in the hearing nerve cell, in the inner ear and hearing ability of the brain.


OAE - Otoacoustic Emissions: In this procedure the test consist of the small probe that is placed inside the ear canal to detecting the echoes which are produced by the inner ear in response to the sounds. The main objective of this test to find out the obstacle in the ear canal, fluid behind the eardrum or any problem related to cochlea.

These tests mainly take approximately ten to fifteen minutes to complete. Mostly many hospitals have in favor to take either of the two tests the reason behind is cost and ease of access of well-trained staff, but not because one method is better than the other one. Both these tests are as a matter of fact complementary to each other, but to carry out a complete analysis of hearing loss, both of them are very essential to be carried out. In most of the cases 3% to 4% infant gives the negative result, but less than 2% is reported to have a genuine hearing loss while using such type of test.
