Hearing Through Touch

Six students for most teachers are similar to taking a well deserved vacation

. It is not as easy though for a lady instructor from the hearing impaired program.

Her six students, who range in age from 5 to 15, are part of a program funded by a three year federal grant through the local special education cooperative. When it comes to classes on learning disabilities the coop serves 19 school districts.

Profoundly deaf are four out of the six students with two who are hard of hearing. Regular classrooms are adaptable for one who is hard of hearing but a decibel loss of 60 or less requires special assistance to be given.

The degree of loss for the profoundly deaf is 90 decibels or more. Special learning methods is applied for a person in this particular situation. The hearing impaired class have students who make use of their own hearing aids which are suited for their abilities to hear.

By making use of a special audio device the students are able to hear what their teacher is saying. This particular phonic ear system works with 83 radio frequencies. As a teacher speaks, the microphone being used is able to transmit the speech to receivers worn by every child.

The different frequencies allow the teacher to communicate with one child at a time without interrupting the other children's work.

11/2 hours of traveling is required for students to reach the one room facility described as nothing short of being fantastic. Crafting everything specially requires for a hefty sum of money to be spent.

The carpeted room is full of visual aids and audio equipment and includes a complete kitchen. Actually, the kitchen is also a learning tool wherein language is taught through recipe interpretations.

Language is at the center of everything they do because the teacher says that it is the most important thing for the students. Each word is repeated 10,000 times for it to be recalled by a student.

For some it may be boring but these students need it terribly. Sight is a tool that the hard of hearing use to make learning descriptive words slightly easier. When speaking of today, tomorrow, yesterday, and time, less meaning is given.

Instructional methods come in different types. In order to give a total communication learning experience, the teacher stresses the need for both signs and speech.

By watching how another's lips move, students are also able to understand them and this is lip reading which they teach.

She favors the oral method of teaching, though demanding that her students communicate verbally. We live in one society and for these children being able to communicate the same way is the way to become accepted.

Another method used, his time through touch, is known as the tactile method. Students touch the teacher's throat and feel her tongue to understand the g, s, or th sounds. She has been used to having a student's hand in her mouth from the moment she steps into the classroom.

Learning pertains to spelling, math, grammar, and social studies. Subjects including gym, music, typing, home economics, speech, and auto mechanics might be added to the curriculum given to a student who is preparing to enter a regular school system. Students allowed to attend the class must be 18 and younger.

Her drive to help the hard of hearing may pose a number of questions. No secrets are kept with regard to her choice of careers. She experienced a bout with hearing loss at the tender age of five.

When she was born, she had closed eustachian tubes and no cartilage in her ears. In the same way as those she helped out, corrective surgery helped her regain her hearing. This career path was determined by her as early as during the fifth grade when she wanted to be of help to children.

Studying in a college in Illinois, she now carries a special education degree. Two degrees and a certificate for deaf and elementary education as well as learning disabilities respectively became her achievements in a Florida university she went to afterwards.

She was a teacher in a school for the deaf in fort Lauderdale before arriving in Southwest Kansas two years ago. When the phonic ear system transmits sounds to the ears of the students they have no choice but to be attentive and this is a big help for the teacher who goes day in and day out working harder than a horse.
