Heart Health: A Simple Guide To Keep Your Heart Pumping

Last month, I and my friends organized a Para sailing trip

. We had a lot of fun except for the fact that my sister Neelu had a tough time. She could not enjoy even a single sport because of fretfulness and breathlessness, later she was diagnosed with Hypertension!!

Like her, a lot of people, even some of you who are reading this article are happily overlooking the reality that you too might be at jeopardy of developing soaring blood pressure disorder.

Hypertension summarization

In our body, the blood vessels know as Arteries carry the oxygenated blood, enriched with nutrients from the heart to the various tissue and organs of the body. If the pressure with which the blood is carried is exceeds the normal value, then that condition is tagged as High Blood Pressure/Hypertension. The standard blood pressure is 120/80, where the upper value symbolizes the systolic and the lower value symbolizes the diastolic pressure respectively. The systolic pressure is that pressure of the arteries when the heart contracts whereas the diastolic pressure signifies the pressure of the relaxed state.

Prevention measures

Inhale and exhale: Inhale and exhale deeply and slowly, in total stillness and harmony with your surroundings. Whenever you feel restless and frazzled, try this. Our kidneys produce an enzyme known as Renin, accountable for uplifting the blood pressure. The release of this stress enzyme is significantly reduced upon practicing breathing exercises.

Eat healthy: Cut down on your intake of sodium, excessive sugar and red meat etc. The consumption of fruits and vegetables should increase as these are loaded with essential minerals, vitamin c and plenty of soluble fibers which are good for lowering high blood pressure. Enhance your ingestion of calcium rich material such as milk, spinach and curd as calcium is believed to counteract the hypertensive effects of sodium. Cut down on alcohol, caffeinated drinks and tobacco.

Stretch a bit: Regular work out exerts less pressure on the heart which in turn exerts less force on the arteries and hence the blood pressure is under control. Therefore, go for a walk or indulge in any form of a physical activity but, regularly.

Relax: Take at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, spend some time with family and friends and dont stress over small things. Life is too short to fret over trivial matters.

Finally, learn to respect and love your body. Hypertension can ruin your lifestyle. By following a nutritious diet, a little bit of physical activity and a positive frame of mind, you can ward off many fateful diseases.

Stay healthy
