Heating And Air - The Hvac Information You Need

It only takes a single hot day without A/C or a single cold day without the heater to make you appreciate what most homeowners take for granted

. The power goes out or the system breaks and suddenly you realize how thin the veneer is between you and the way people lived 100 years ago. It is an unpleasant but probably needed reminder of how good we have it in the modern age. Of course, it's impossible not to take for granted something that you wake up to every day. But that doesn't mean you can't do a few things to make sure that you continue to have it. Here is the heating and air information you need.

Purpose

It's easy to say, "Well, A/C cools the home and the heater warms it," and, really, it's not much more complicated than that. Of course, the A/C part of your heating and air system doesn't work as a refrigerator as much as you might think. Rather, it takes the heat out of the air before circulating it back through your home. A cold evaporator coil brings the temperature of the air down. Of course, it's a complicated system that performs the task, but that's it in a nutshell. The heater is fueled by electricity or gas, making use of a furnace to warm the air on the other end of the spectrum.

Problems

It would be nice if your heating and air system could work forever without incident, but there are too many moving parts and too much complex machinery for that to be the case. Eventually, something will go wrong. If you get a refrigerant leak, the evaporator coil cannot maintain the cold that transforms your air. The "conditioning" part of the system is no longer working. If your filters get too clogged, it may be impossible for air to get into the system to begin with. Any of a hundred other little parts could break or wear out, causing the system to either fail or work with much less efficiency.

Maintenance

Most homeowners know they should change their filters every month or two, but have little idea about what other forms of maintenance they should be doing. Well, the answer is "very little". However, that doesn't mean the system is self-maintaining by any means. Wise homeowners will contact a heating and air service company to come out once a year and give their system a full maintenance once over. Not only will this restore the efficiency lost over the preceding year, it will give you a heads up on any big problems that could be brewing. You can get those problems fixed now before they leave you stranded without modern comforts on a day when you really need them.
