They block unattractive sights, make wonderful and natural-looking privacy shields, and serve as windbreakers. Traditionally, hedge plants were also used to mark boundaries, such as property lines.

Hedges, both clipped and unclipped, are often utilized to add variety in the layout of gardens. The more common clipped plants are privet, hawthorn, beech, yew, leyland cypress, hemlock, arborvitae, barberry, box, holly, oleander, and lavender, among others. Unclipped hedges, on the other hand, take up more space, but oftentimes this is compensated by flowering. Rosa multiflora is widely used for this purpose. In mild climates, more exotic flowering hedges are made, using Ceanothus, Hibiscus, Camellia, orange jessamine (Murraya paniculata), or lillypilly (Syzygium species).

The decision as to whether to prune hedge plants depends on the purpose. Hedge plants which look as if they have a bad hair day may not work well in a garden that is handsomely pruned and organized. However, plants intended for privacy screens or windbreaks are usually allowed to grow naturally. Then again this would depend on the intent of the grower. If there are intended decorative functions, trimming to the desired sizes and shapes could still be done.

A row of densely growing hedge plants will provide you with security to some degree. If you still need more, select shrubs or small trees that have thorns like hawthorns, or at least those with prickly leaves. Also, if you want sturdy windbreakers, choose trees with good wind resistant properties like Escallonia "Apple Blossom" and Fuchsia "Riccartonii".

Hedge plants can be evergreen or deciduous. The former will retain their foliage all year round. This being the case, evergreen plants can provide screen or shield even during the winter months. However, heavy snow may break their branches and kill the plants. The latter will lose their leaves during winter rendering them practically useless during this period.

Basically, your choice of hedge plants is determined by how high you require your hedge to grow, how quickly you want it to grow, and how much maintenance you can afford. Fast growing shrubs will require more regular trimming, sometimes twice a year or more. However, these varieties will provide you with the barrier you need in not in no time.

Pruning or trimming of hedges should be done in such a way that the base is wider than the top (an "inverted keystone" shape). This method will allow sufficient sunlight to reach the bottom of the plant thus ensuring that it remains healthy. It is recommended that you invest in the appropriate trimmer and tape measure for easier and proper pruning. For precision pruning, set guides using stakes and strings. This may be a little time consuming, but it will produce professional looking results.
