Help Clean Up Pollution As A Consumer

You can play a key role in cleaning up the pollution in the environment as a consumer

. It's what you buy or don't buy that can make a big change not only in your immediate surroundings but on a grander scale, too.

Do a search on google or yahoo to locate factories whose production is done with ecology in mind. You can also search for the companies that you usually buy from to find out if that company is doing anything to curb the pollution or add to it by not doing anything.

Some companies are employing techniques to handle the environment but are creating toxic products. There is one company that I know of that is utilizing the stuff in a garbage dump to create the energy to run the factories. This is certainly a step in the right direction but the products the company creates are toxic household cleaners that are packaged in plastic bottles. This is a company that is still not on the right track because the point is that you want to eliminate the toxins and use packaging that decomposes.

There are some everyday products that we are using that never biodegrade. One such item is plastic foam. You can see this being used in restaurants, cafeterias and fast food joints. Plastic foam is also used to create take-out coffee cups. There are many manufacturers still producing this product on a worldwide basis. You can just not buy the products or go to the places serving food and drinks in such containers. If you want you can take one more step which is to write the offices of the places that you are not going to in order to let the managers know that you stopped being a patron because of the products used.

There are some other plastic products that will never biodegrade while others last for centuries before breaking down. One point that is not often spoken about is that once items are tossed into the trash in a plastic bag, it goes to a dump. At the dump, because the plastic does not break down for centuries, the items in the trash bag don't either. As a consumer, you can do your part and refuse to use plastic bags at stores. Instead, carry your own canvas bags.

Acceptable ways to get rid of trash are biodegradable products. One company that is doing something about it is rePETe that creates trash bags from 100% recycled materials that biodegrade at the dump. There are other companies that you can find via the internet by doing a search. You will discover a large variety of bags manufactured. The cost is comparable and in some cases, less than the non-decomposing bags. This is a safe alternative for handling trash so that it decomposes in a timely fashion.

As a note, when you are searching for companies that produce biodegradable garbage bags, you will turn up results also for a substance called polyethylene. Polyethylene can be recycled and used to make items that need to last a long time - like for centuries. But that sales pitch is being used to sell polyethylene garbage bags. Garbage bags get filled with debris, thrown away and wind up in a dump. It is not going to be recycled from there. Millions of polyethylene bags find their way to the dump daily. The contents in the bag are not going to biodegrade until the bag does and that can take hundreds of years.

Do your research, don't purchase the destructive products but do support the companies that are creating safe solutions for the environment. By doing so, you will have a tremendous impact.
