Help! I'm Stressed!

Thoughts from a Chiropractor - Decatur, GA

Stress implies various things to different people. It's commonly defined as something like an overburdening of tasks or tough circumstances, producing strain, anxiety and tension. However, this emotional definition of stress was not its origins. The formal use of the word 'stress' relates to the field of engineering, where it describes the physical force acting upon mechanical structures. However, in the 1900's, a Harvard physiologist used the word to describe human stress. He first described and named the 'fight or flight' mechanism in the body, and showed the damaging bodily effects of a continuous stress response.

As medicine has advanced, it's been very easy to correlate stress to illness. Think of bodily stress, the result of physical trauma upon the body. Most sickness is brought on and often made worse by emotional stress. Finally, chemical stress is placed on our bodies from the environment, which includes the food and drink we put in our bodies as well an environmental toxins.

Try as we might, we simply cannot control the stresses that we encounter. Though we cannot control the causes, we certainly can alter the effects of these stresses. A healthy and strong foundation will help us deal with physical, chemical, and emotional stresses.

A Few Examples of Stress

Your out walking in the woods and a bear comes across your path. It looks around for a minute, then decides to come check you out closer. In the words of the Clash, "should you stay or should you go?" Either way, your sympathetic nervosu system has now been aroused to the fight or flight sydrome. Your blood flow increases, pupils become dilated, and your heart is pumping blood at an increased rate. Your body is ready.

The sympathetic nervous system, which originates in your spine, just under your neck and mid-back is a complex network of nerves, cells, pathways and neurons. The "fight-or-flight" response is hardwired into your system, and while necessary in an extreme emergency, it is often active during other stressful yet non-dire times. In this case, it can be taxing on the body.

The initial symptoms of chronic stress are considered relatively mild, like headaches and frequent susceptibility to colds. Prolonged stress however starts taking its toll on the system. Long-term stress can suppress the immune system, which can lead to disease and chronic illness, fatigue, fibromyalgia, cancer, bowel trouble, depression, diabetes, hair loss, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, obesity, obsessive-compulsive or anxiety disorders, ulcers, and more.

The Chiropractic Treatment of Stress

Now let's say you're watering your lawn at home, and there's a twist in the hose. Without water, your grass will not survive. Your options are: A) bring water in from elsewhere to feed the yard, B) let it be, or C) go fix the hose. We can safely assume that for most, the course of action will be to locate the source of the problem, and fix the problem.

Similar to your lawn, the bones of the spine occasionally need to be "un-kinked." The nerves that make up this pathway are sending some pretty important information between your brain and your extremities. If there is interruption in this process, similar to the hose, your body may lose its ability to function as well as it should, bringing pain, sickness, or other health problems - symptoms.

A chiropractor will find the blocked pathways, straighten them out, which allows your body to heal itself naturally. Chiropractors look to treat the causes of an illness as opposed to the symptoms. Our goal is to promote health and wellness naturally with chiropractic care.
