Class: Hybrid Tea Roses
Now called Large Flowered Roses
This is the most popular class and can be considered the "classic rose" as the flower stems are long and the blooms are a good shape. Typical hybrid teas have blooms which are generally large consisting of many petals that form a distinct "cone" shape. Flowers are borne individually or with several side buds. Hybrid Teas do flower less frequently than Floribundas.

Class: Floribunda Roses
Now called: Cluster Flowered Roses
Floribundas tend to bear flowers in clusters on each stalk, and several blooms will open at any one time on each stalk. This class gives the most colourful and reliable displays that can last for quite some time, but it is generally regarded that the flowers themselves are not quite as elegant as the Hybrid Tea class being smaller and less fragrant.

Class: Shrub Roses
This is a large class of bush type roses that have only one feature in common they are neither Hybrid Teas nor Floribundas. There is a great variety in size and behaviour some are giants and others quite tiny, some bloom for just a few weeks and others will flower for the whole season. Some are easy to grow and resistant to disease, while others have no resistance.

Class: Climbers and Ramblers
This is a type of rose that if tied to a support can be made to climb. They are ideal for garden arches and pergolas. Ramblers have long, supple stems which bear large clusters of small flowers during the summer season. As vigorous growers, they require regular pruning. Climbers have much stiffer stems than Ramblers but will often flower more than once and the flowers are larger.

Class: Miniature Roses
As the name suggests, these dwarf flowers are ideal for growing in containers or using indoors (on a temporary basis) as pot plants. They are also ideal for flower beds. The maximum height is around 40cm although many varieties are much shorter than this.

Popular Miniatures: Angela Rippon, Red Ace, Cinderella, Pretty Polly, Orange Sunblaze
Class: Patio Roses
This class first appeared in the 1980s and now contains many popular varieties. They were originally grouped with the Floribundas as they are essentially compact versions of that class. Patio roses are generally short, growing to about 50cm maximum height. Like Miniature Roses, they make excellent container and bedding plants.
