Help Your Baby Speak With Signing

When our third baby was born, he was nine weeks premature

. He had many complications at birth and stayed in the hospital for four weeks after he was born. He was in a drug induced coma for over a week to regulate his breathing. It was a scary time for all of us. We hovered above his little isolate and prayed for him to live and be well. Time went on it was finally time to bring him home, oxygen, apnea monitors and all. Those were a couple of terrifying first few nights. Time marched on and taking care of him just became routine.

Our baby wasn't reaching the cognitive milestones the doctor had set for him as he aged. At 18-20 months he didn't have any speech, the doctor suggested we teach him baby sign language to help him communicate. We learned the basics; more, please, water, bottle, juice, tired. He learned them quickly and was a happier baby. The baby signing time we spent with him helped his communication grow and his desire to "talk" more. He was enrolled in speech therapy at this time and between the two became a calmer, more content baby. By three his speech was almost on target level. This was like a miracle to see his interest grow and his ability to communicate his little wants and needs mature.

When he was older another brother was born to our family. Although born without complications or problems we started teaching him baby sign language at an early age just so he could communicate. It worked wonderfully. He loved using his tiny hands to ask for the things he needed. I have watched my sister-in-law teach her babies sign language also and observe the joy the babies and toddlers receive when they can enter into the larger world around them.

The earlier babies communicate the happier they become and they more thirst for learning they develop. If you can teach them simple words like "more" and "please" they are learning the secrets to interacting with others at the earliest stages of life. And a happier, quieter, more contented baby means peace in the home!
