Help Your Child Stop Thumb Sucking With The Guidance Of A Dentist

Every parent answers the questions at the pediatricians office about their child

. Are they eating solids? Do you give them whole milk? Do you give the recommended supplements if they are nursing? When it comes to going to the dentist in your child's early years you may dread the question, does your child suck their thumb?

We all know that it is normal and even expected for babies to have a need to suck. Some babies lose this need as early as six months old. Other babies go on to develop a habit. It is normal through toddler and preschool years. This habit is not problematic until the child starts getting permanent teeth. When your child continues thumb sucking they could be changing the alignment of their permanent teeth. This could cause an overbite, or speech problems like lisping and not being able to pronounce T's and D's.

Your child may even have a difficult time with children teasing them. If this is occurring you need to let your child know you are on their side. It may help reinforce the need to quit to have a dentist in your child's practice tell them why they should stop thumb sucking. Most of these professionals have seen children through the years who suffer from this habit. They will know how important it is to be gentle with your child and explain it in a way that empowers your child to make a change. Never allow someone to shame your child. This could have a negative impact and cause your child to continue.

Thumb sucking can be a difficult habit to break. It can be tied to emotions and your child may well depend on it to help them fall asleep. If your child is having a hard time you might bandage the thumb they prefer as a reminder. Have your child wear a glove to bed so that when they go to use the thumb it reminds them. Help your child by distracting them or offering them their favorite stuffed toy. You may even try a reward system. Explain to your child that once they have had so many successful nights they can get a new toy or do a sticker chart. Be sure your child knows that you understand this is a process and it will take time.

If you find that your child still needs help it may be time to discuss options with a dentist in your child's practice. There may be devices that can help your child to quit. While it may seem like the right time to you it may not to your child. Remember to model patience.
