Help Your Students Love Learning By Going The Extra Mile

My high school theatre teacher went the extra mile--literally!--by taking my troupe to New York City

. It was a beautiful experience which helped me love learning enough to continue its pursuit throughout my life. Can you go the extra mile to present such opportunities for your students?

When I was 16, I had a great opportunity. I was able to travel with my school-based theatre group from Arizona to New York in order to be submersed in the Big Apple's rich artistic history. Not only did we have the opportunity to see multiple Broadway shows, we were also able to tour famous landmarks, including Julliard and the Roxy.

What an experience! It was so amazing and inspiring to be right there in the epicenter of arts and culture. The other members of my theater group and I seriously had the time of our lives, and it wasn't just about having a little vacation with friends. This was true, first-hand, hands-on education that you simply cannot get in a classroom. It was something that encouraged and inspired all of us then and for many years to come.

I think more students should have such chances to travel, but the expense can be traumatizing for either public school budgets or family finances to bear. But that doesn't mean the possibilities should be ruled out altogether. What are some ways to broaden your students' world without breaking the bank?

First of all, don't let the traditional field trip die. Through my work with a few elementary schools, I have noticed that even local field trips are few and far between, if they exist at all, because the school administration finds it a hassle. Yes, it's true that it can be a hassle to organize the trip, get funding, and then keep track of so many students while you're out and about, but think of the memories and learning experiences these kinds of activities create for the students. Seeing something for yourself, in person, has such a greater impact than just reading somebody else's account of it.

Don't be easily shot down, though. Fight for field trips, as they truly can engender cherished memories and a love of learning. It can be extremely difficult for individual teachers to take on the bureaucracy, but it can be worth it. Try to find out about major glitches in past fieldtrips and brainstorm on how to fix them.

If it is truly impossible to arrange a cross-town excursion with your students, then take some time to visit local educational attractions yourself. Find out some of the essentials to their exhibits and try to mimic them in the classroom.
