While the CPSC standards are not compulsory to be pursued, these measures can still add to minimizing risks of drownings. Moreover, here are a few facts gathered by the Commission regarding residential pool tragedies. About 300 children, 5 years old and below, drown in home pools every year. Also, there is higher percentage of drowning in ones own pool rather than in pools owned by friends or relatives. The CSPC study states, 65 percent of the accidents occurred in a pool owned by the victims immediate family and 33 percent of the accidents occurred in pools owned by relatives or friends. Also, there have been reports that accidents cannot be avoided even the children are supervised by one or both parents and other adult guardians. The main focus of CSPC is to install pool barriers that would prevent a child from getting over, under or through and keep the child from gaining access to the pool except when supervising adults are present. The Commission recommends a sturdy barricade made from steel to be at least 48 inches above ground. For chain link fences, the mesh size should not be more than 1 inches square. For latticework, the limit opening should only be 1 inches. These barrier types are for in-ground pools. On the other hand, aboveground pools could be better enjoyed with barriers. The other concern here is that the ladder should be removable so that kids cannot go in for a swim without adult supervision. For both pool types, there should be gates to serve as added restriction. Lastly, it is important that the barriers and gates are installed in permanent positions. Even though the children may know how to swim, they are not saved from encountering fatal accidents. Adult supervision is an ultimatum at all times. It is equally vital that the supervising guardians know how to properly perform CPR. And as kids love adventure, they might try diving. They should not be allowed to do so unless they had proper lessons or are equipped with lifesaving gear. There are devices that can add protective measures for your kids. Alarms, covers and nets are great gadgets that can secure the pool. For one, there are pool alarms that can be attached to your doorstep and pool borders that will be set off once your kid steps on these. There are safety nets and covers that are made with tough materials. There are net brands when properly positioned, anchored and tensioned, even teenagers will have a hard time removing. On another note, drowning is not the only accident that may occur in swimming pools. Health hazards may also be present. The sanitary condition of the water should also be taken into consideration. There should be regular inspections of the water and chlorine level. The drainage should be frequently checked if these are working well. It is also advisable that you are familiarized with the safety vacuum release system. So if ever something obstructs the drain, you can easily shut the system and suction off. A swimming pool will always be equated with fun and a way to relinquish summer heat.
