Navigating the language barrier when you travel to Spain can leave you feeling frustrated when you are not able to communicate in the local language. If you stay at one of the more popular tourist resorts there is a very good chance that you will not even need to speak Spanish. In areas that cater to a large number of tourists, the workers in the bars, cafes and shops have learnt English to make business easier and more profitable.
What happens when you venture out of the comfort zone or visit areas where no-one speaks English? In these situations there are 5 phrases that will come in very handy to help you understand what is being said or get people to understand what you are saying!
1. Habla ingls? - Do you speak English?
You should try and learn the local language but there are times when your travel dictionary just isnt enough. Rather than assume that the person you are speaking to does not speak English why not ask them? If they speak English you have just made your life must easier, and even if they only speak a little English, communication will still be a little easier. Of course, if they speak no English at all, you will need to try the next phrase!
2. Puedes hablar ms despacio por favor! - Can you speak more slowly please!
If you already know a few words of Spanish and use it you will probably find yourself facing a barrage of questions in response. Just because you can speak a little Spanish does not mean it will be easy to understand the reply when they are talking at what sounds like 100 miles an hour. Ask them to talk more slowly and you will be able to understand much more of what they are saying.
3.Donde puedo encontrar? - Where can I find...?
Whether you are looking for somewhere to eat or looking for a particular tourist attraction it is always good to get suggestions from the locals if you cant find what you are looking for. Some of the best places to visit are not in the guide books. This phrase also comes in useful in emergency situations when you need to find a doctor - "Donde puedo encontrar un mdico?"
4.Puede llevarme a ...? - Can you take me to ...?
When you jump into a taxi you need to be able to tell the driver where you want to go. Using this phrase and the name of your destination you can get where you are going with the minimum of fuss.
5.Puede ayudarme? - Can you help me?
