Helpful Tips For Moving With Pets
Moving to a new home is stressful enough for a human who fully understands the task at hand
. But have you thought about how a big move could affect your pet? A household pet can easily become overwhelmed, stressed, and even depressed when their environment changes without warning.
To help prepare for a successful move with a pet, consider the following tips to keep your pet safe, sound, and well-adjusted throughout the moving process:
Request veterinary records in advance. Realtor Mag recommends requesting updated copies of a pets veterinary records if youre moving out of the city. Having a current vaccination record on hand will make it easier to transfer to a new vet and will also expedite care in the case of an emergency during a move. On top of that, if you're moving internationally, you will need to present rabies and medical certificates for your pet before boarding an airplane.
Arrange for private transportation, if necessary. According to federal regulations, Austin moving companies arent allowed to ship pets in crates within a moving van. If you dont have room for your pet to travel with you, you can arrange separate transportation through a moving company, in some cases. But to keep a pet comfortable and relaxed during a move, its recommended that pets travel with their owners in a car, if possible.
Lock your pet in a separate room on moving day. So that your pet doesnt run away out of fear once movers arrive, make sure that they are locked safely in their crate in a separate room, like a bathroom, during the moving process. Keeping your pet in a crate will protect movers from scratches and bites and will also make sure that your pet doesnt get injured underfoot or run into the street through an open door.
Stick to a regular schedule. Even though you may be busy on moving day, remember to make your pet a priority. It will help them to stay comfortable and relaxed if you maintain a regular feeding schedule, including routine walks and bathroom breaks. Though it may seem like a hassle to take your dog on a walk around the block in the midst of a big move, the familiar routine will be comforting and will help your pooch to stay calm.
Create a familiar area in your new home. Pets are automatically attracted to the familiar. To make your new home as comfortable as possible early on, set up a special area for your pet with their bed, toys, and food and water bowls. You may want to help your pet acclimate to their new space by playing, petting, and cuddling with them so that they begin to recognize that they can relax in their new home.
During a major move, its important to prepare for the worst when relocating with a pet. Make sure to keep a photo of your pet with you to use in the unfortunate event that they get loose and run away from home.
When you use all of the tips listed above, you can greatly increase your odds of keeping your pet relaxed throughout a move for an easier adjustment to their new home!
