We all know what migraine is right? For the benefit of those who do not, migraine is a medical condition wherein the patient experiences extreme headaches. Headaches that are said to be so intense one would wish to die. But did you know that there are different kinds and subdivisions of migraines? And of them is what doctors and physicists would call a Hemiplegic Migraine.

What is is this type of migraine? What sets it different from the regular migraine most people suffer from? And how is this treated or prevented? Well to start, let us first define what hemiplegic is. Hemiplegic is a case wherein there is partial or complete paralysis of one side of the body, either the left or the right. That means, in patients with migraines of this type, they only feel those intense headaches on one part of their head. However, there are also other signs and symptoms to watch out for when diagnosing this condition.

Migraines of this type not only produces excruciating headaches but other side effects as well such as nervous breakdown, epilepsy, and vascular diseases as this medical condition is believed to be both neurological and vascular in nature. In other words, a migraine which is said to be hemiplegic affects both the nervous and cardiovascular systems of the body. Several other side effects of the disease may arise such as insufficient muscular coordination or ataxia, lethargy, fever, weakened consciousness up to complete loss of consciousness, inflammation of the meninges (covering of the brain), and even emesis and vertigo.

Treatment may involve administration of pain relievers or analgesics such as ergotamines and triptans. Drugs that cause emesis may also alleviate the pain as well. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may also be given to the patient to prevent serious inflammatory process of the brain and its meninges. For prevention, one can opt to give flunarizine or verapamil which are both classified as calcium blockers.

Hemiplegic migraine is not your ordinary migraine. It is more complicated and harbors with it several side effects which are believed to be more devastating in its effects. That is why early diagnosis and treatment is the best option to overcome a disease such as this.
