Hemorrhoid Ligation - An Alternative To Surgery?

There are a ton of different ways to deal with your hemorrhoids problem

. Choosing the best one can be difficult at times. Hopefully this article will help give you the information you need to make an informed decision about how you will deal with your hemorrhoids problem.

1. Ligation can help your hemorrhoid problem

Rubber banding, or ligation of hemorrhoids is a realistic alternative to surgery, and in certain cases or severities of hemorrhoids, ligation will do the necessary to remove the problem.

2. An alternative use for rubber

Ligation involves the use of rubber bands - tiny little rubber bands, which are stretched and installed at the bas of the hemorrhoid. They cut of the blood supply to the tissues that make up the hemorrhoids. Just as in the old fashioned method of docking a dog's tail, rubber band ligation has the effect of causing the unwanted tissues to 'fall off'.

3. How does ligation work?

Ligation uses rubber bands to constrict the tissues in the base of the hemorrhoid,. Just how much tissue can be removed by this method will depend on the shape of the hemorrhoids formed. The rubber band will be placed as close to the base of the hemorrhoid as possible.

Once the applicator tool has been removed, the rubber band will shrink in place, restricting the blood flow to the tissues in the hemorrhoid. The constricted blood flow causes the tissues to 'die', and the hemorrhoid tissue will eventually be scoured off by passing stools. This takes 2-3 weeks to happen.

As the dead tissue is scoured off, some bleeding may occur. Sometimes this bleeding is extensive. Your post-procedural care advice will tell you how to deal with this event.

4. Ligation does not necessarily hurt

Ligation is a real and practical alternative for some types of hemorrhoids, and can be an almost-pain free method of removing some types of hemorrhoids. Typically type 2 hemorrhoids are treated in this way.

Normal surgical removal techniques involve cutterage or laser surgery. These procedures can be painful. The anus and rectum are sensitive areas of the body, and the stretching/dilation of the sphincter muscles can be extremely painful, especially if the hemorrhoids have formed in the immediate area. Post operative pain is intense, requiring a short stay in hospital, mainly for the purposes of providing pain relief.

Ligation is generally not as painful post-procedure as these other types of surgery.

5. What does it involve?

A proctoscope is inserted into the anus. Forceps are used to hold the hemorrhoid and to guide it into the opening of the ligator (the toll which applies the rubber band). The rubber band is then positioned as close up to the end of the hemorrhoid tissue as possible, and the rubber band installed in place, after which the ligator is removed and if necessary, the procedure repeated on other tissues.

6. It sounds so painful!

If pain is experienced (some people are more sensitive in the area than others), local anesthetics are an option. Post procedural pain is minimal in comparison to other surgical techniques, and if required painkillers are used after the event.

Anti-biotics are generally prescribed as a pre-cursor to the procedure, and if necessary afterwards.
