Hemorrhoid Treatments and Steps to Take to Prevent Recurring Hemorrhoids
Most everybody has heard of hemorrhoids, but not everyone knows what they are
. How does someone get them and more importantly, prevent them from coming back? Are there lifestyle factors for developing hemorrhoids that can be changed? If you get them, what are the best methods of hemorrhoid treatment? Approximately 40% of the adult population will suffer from them at some point in their lives, so what are they?
Simply put, hemorrhoids (also called piles) are an inflammation of the tissues around the rectum. There are internal hemorrhoids as well as external hemorrhoids, which are a lump or lumps around the anus. Some of the symptoms include: itching, burning, or pain during bowel movements. For many, their first clue is blood either on the toilet paper or in the bowl, which is an indication that a doctor should be seen.
In all but the most extreme cases, hemorrhoids are not a major threat to one's health, but they can be very uncomfortable. It is a rather embarrassing subject, too. In some cases it is possible to find the hemorrhoid thrombosed, which means that it has developed a blood clot, which can be very painful. The pain can also come from a prolapsed hemorrhoid which is tissue that protrudes from the anus and gets sore from friction.
Two of the primary causes of hemorrhoids are common lifestyle factors that can be easily adjusted. Number one is diet. Hemorrhoids most often accompany constipation which can cause excess friction in the rectum, leading to swelling and often bleeding. So it is important to get plenty of fiber in your diet. Also, it is crucial for people suffering from hemorrhoids to drink plenty of water. Eating more salad is a good way to accomplish both objectives in one step. Additionally, avoid eating too many refined foods and sugars which can lead to constipation. The goal is a more regular and softer bowel movement, which will lead to a better hemorrhoid situation. Even if hemorrhoids are not an issue at all, those diet tips are a good idea.
A sedentary lifestyle is the next major risk factor for developing hemorrhoids. Be sure to get up and move around sporadically so that blood flow to the rectal area is increased. If you have a desk job that involves long stretches at the desk, get up every 30 minutes just to move a bit and the improved circulation will reduce the risk of hemorrhoids. Basically, sitting all day puts constant pressure on the area and this can also lead to the development of hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids treatment can take many different forms depending on the situation and some methods are more effective than others. Ointments and creams are commonly prescribed. They work by relaxing the tissues, shrinking the swelling and in many cases helping to soothe the itching. They work fine as a temporary fix, but in general are not the best for long-term results.
Another treatment method is using suppositories. These are more effective for internal hemorrhoids. The aim is to reduce swelling and to provide some lubrication. This keeps the hemorrhoids from rupturing and bleeding. Although temporarily effective for short-term relief this is another method that doesn't cure the long-term issues.
Other treatments for hemorrhoids include pills, cryotherapy, and/or surgery, all of which are expensive, potentially invasive and may or may not fix the underlying problem.
Recently, some new, all natural hemorrhoid treatments have come to the market and based on the testimonials and evidence, seem to be extremely effective hemorrhoid treatments. No surgery, creams, or pills - just all natural methods that get right to the root of the problem. It is a whole system to treat and prevent. It is a holistic approach to treating hemorrhoids that deserves more attention. Not a quick fix, but a program that looks at the underlying problems such as diet and lifestyle in addition to taking care of the hemorrhoids themselves.
